Hurricane Harvey made landfall near Rockport TX about 10:00PM CDT Friday night. Top sustained winds were 130mph. Rockport High School sustained heavy damage when a portion of the roof collapsed. A senior housing complex collapsed. The Rockport courthouse sustained major damage with a cargo trailer halfway in the building. Multiple tornadoes reported in the Houston/Galveston areas. There are reports of scattered structural fires and a shooting was reported in Corpus Christi. Residents along the San Bernard River were advised to evacuate and most TX Gulf coast counties are under flash flood watches.
Many locations are under a boil-water notice. Power outages are widespread. President Donald Trump promptly granted a Disaster Declaration to Texas Governor Greg Abbotts request. More than 700 members of the Texas Army and Air National Guards, Texas State Guard and the Texas Military Department have been activated and are positioning themselves throughout the state ahead of Hurricane Harvey and its anticipated landfall later this week. Ahead of the storm, FEMA sent supplies from its warehouse in Fort Worth to a staging point at Randolph Air Force Base near San Antonio.

Thread I: Potentially Catastrophic Hurricane Harvey Approaches Texas Gulf Coast
We can pray!
Cajun Navy member says he was shot at during news report of Houston flooding
Excerpt from the article:
As Harvey continues dumping rain on East Texas and the waters there continue to rise, people are starting to panic, rushing rescue boats and even shooting at them if they don't stop, a volunteer told CNN.Clyde Cain, of the Cajun Navy, a Louisiana-based rescue force that gained fame during Hurricane Katrina, said in one instance, a boat broke down, and while the crew sought shelter in a delivery truck, people tried to steal the inoperable boat.
"They're making it difficult for us to rescue them," he said. "You have people rushing the boat. Everyone wants to get in at the same time. They're panicking. Water is rising."
I caught the end of that feed. Are they evacuating another hospital?
Harvey’s swan song to Houston. Unbelievable.
I saw that too. Apparently that is St. Luke’s Hospital. Near 45? She said the patients were evacuated earlier today and so the reason for that convoy of ambulances waiting wasn’t clear.
It’s not unusual for ambulances to be staged in waiting areas on normal days at hospitals so maybe they’re continuing to use the parking lot? I don’t know.
We should continue to (pray). Over at storm2k, which is basically a group ranging from weather / storm buffs to professional meteorologists, I think there are more prayer requests and prayers given, including one now from what I believe is the forum owner, than there are here. This from a group that follows weather disasters as their namesake. They are really worried over there - with good reason.
over the next 24-36 hrs some model disagreement on the exact location of Harvey,,this is super critical .....as to the location of the intense deformation rains occurring ....this things really can’t take off at night
10 miles could make difference in the dams get huge amounts over the next 36 hours .like the NAM is saying...or just east like its cousin the NAM 3k is saying...or that HRRR model which is more east in the short term
translation: its an hour by hour thing.
heavy rain again inching back west again bit the heaviest along the coast
the exact same set up as about 6-8 hours ago only a few miles more east
From a thread on another board:
” Addicks Reservoir Update
There’s been a lot of misinformation flowing around re: the fill rate of Addicks Reservoir. Below, I’ve provided some information that should clarify the issue for people. As a caveat, I’m not a pro by any means... I just like to read. So take this for what its worth, which is maybe very little.
First, background detail: Addicks Reservoir is an earthen dam, with concrete outlet works and rolled compacted concrete uncontrolled auxiliary spillways. The shape and function of the dam may be confusing to some, as Addicks is not your typical “dam up a canyon” structure. Importantly, the ground at either end of Addicks Dam (referred to as an abutment) is lower than the top of the dam. The abutment at the northern end of the dam has an elevation of 108.0 feet. The abutment at the southern end of the dam has an elevation of 111.0 feet. Further, the northern abutment interfaces with the spillway crest at 112.5 feet, while the southern abutment interfaces with the spillway crest at 115.5 feet. Finally, ACE documents state that both ends Addicks Dam have been “armored with roller-compacted concrete that serve uncontrolled spillways.”
So, what does this mean? A couple things.
First, there are multiple stages at which water will begin to flow out from the dam in places other than the concrete control structures:
At 108 feet, water will begin to flow out and over land at the northern end of the dam (but not the spillway).
At 111 feet, water will begin to flow out and over land at the southern end of the dam (but not the spillway).
At 112.5 feet, water will begin to flow over the spillway at the northern end of the dam.
At 115.5 feet, water will begin to flow over the spillway at the southern end of the dam.
Second, this means that after each of these thresholds are met, the amount of water needed to reach the next threshold will be raised quite a bit. I haven’t been able to find documents stating what the flowrates of the spillways are, but I assume they’re substantial.
Third, due to the thresholds listed above, I find it highly, highly unlikely that water will overtop the dam (which has been a recurring statement in the comments). However, I believe that the water will reach the 108 feet threshold tonight. Once that occurs, we’ll have to wait and see what the flows look like to determine whether the next threshold will be met tonight or tomorrow morning. “
Storm 2k? Am Praying multiple time a day, continually. This is a no joke situation! My family, friends, congregation, and self are praying for the people effected here through out the day, every day! Blessings!!
barker 99.92
Addicks 106.2
GREAT INFO!! but of course it has never been tested expect in modeling
I haven’t heard anything discussed like that about Barker..have you?
All that FoxNews has portrayed are calm or slightly tearful people being evacuated. It didn’t seem entirely realistic...more like something a bit staged.
Very disturbing but not surprising to read that panic has begun....
Very interesting details about Addicks. Thanks for that!
My kin in Richmond had to evac tonight walking through waist deep water :(
She’s late 50s with no family close by. And now she’s lost literally everything.
Millions more like her sadly before this is over with.
I stand corrected. Yes they do release water at Lake Conroe.
Until you watch khou and hear about potential lost family members.
Very sorry for your aunt. Praise God she didn’t lose her life. Things will certainly be a “new normal” from here on out for those affected. Prayers continue for all affected.
This is very useful, thanks!
That must be really hard......help them, please Lord.
Very sad, while I’m relieved that you know she is en route to a safe place on dry land. Hang in there. {{{hugs}}}
