Various ^ | 8/26/2017 | Various

Hurricane Harvey made landfall near Rockport TX about 10:00PM CDT Friday night. Top sustained winds were 130mph. Rockport High School sustained heavy damage when a portion of the roof collapsed. A senior housing complex collapsed. The Rockport courthouse sustained major damage with “a cargo trailer halfway in the building.” Multiple tornadoes reported in the Houston/Galveston areas. There are reports of scattered structural fires and a shooting was reported in Corpus Christi. Residents along the San Bernard River were advised to evacuate and most TX Gulf coast counties are under flash flood watches.

Many locations are under a boil-water notice. Power outages are widespread. President Donald Trump promptly granted a Disaster Declaration to Texas Governor Greg Abbott’s request. More than 700 members of the Texas Army and Air National Guards, Texas State Guard and the Texas Military Department have been activated and are positioning themselves throughout the state ahead of Hurricane Harvey and its anticipated landfall later this week. Ahead of the storm, FEMA sent supplies from its warehouse in Fort Worth to a staging point at Randolph Air Force Base near San Antonio.

Your friend should be fine. I’m to the west of there and only had a short light drizzly rain mid morning and that has stopped. It didn’t deter our cats or the neighbor kids from playing outside all morning. Austin seems to be at the edge of the system. The area to watch over the next few days is Houston.

Looks like public works people in Houston have way more of a clue than those in NO who just left stuff to drown.

Good morning from Idaho, NN! Wild night. The little blue shed was awesome. They ought to name the rebuilt car wash after it.

If they build a blueshed monument, some crazy group would want it removed because it hurt their feelings.

Walmart is always good at helping out with everything from local kid activities to major events like Harvey.

We’d have to pitch it right. Sheds Of Color. Yeah, that’d work...

CNN’s Don Lemon was simply laughable last night. He was visibly steaming when the US Congressman (R-TX) didn’t play into his agenda. I need to find out the name of the Congressman.

Residents in Senior Housing can take care of themselves-——and could evacuate if asked to do so.

If I were entrusted with public safety I would not make that assumption. Not all seniors who live independently drive. Not all have cars. Some may not feel confident enough to make emergency plans for themselves. Some may not have the money to do so. That's why we have public safety personnel. To ensure that people who can't bug out by themselves, get assistance. I would have thought. .

Brother-in-law and family rode it out in Corpus Christi last night. He's been out and driving around. Said streets not flooded and damage not too bad. They don't have power back, yet.

Sister-in-law is in Katy (just west of Houston). They currently have clear skies and little rain so far(appear to be between bands). My father-in-law's sister is a nun at the convent in Rockport. They haven't been able to contact her, yet.

“Not all seniors who live independently drive. Not all have cars. Some may not feel confident enough to make emergency plans for themselves. “

All of that could apply to some non-seniors.

The large percentage of seniors who live independently are perfectly capable of taking care of themselves in a storm emergency.

They are old,not stupid.

Thank you much for the local reports. Communication in Rockport has been difficult. Hopefully your in-law evacuated to a safe location.

I have family in Sealy. We used to play the Stephen Austin Golf Course there. The Brazos has rearranged the Golf Course a few times over the years. Hate to think what may happen with this storm.

The course was covered with pecan trees. My father-in-law had a double sided wedge. He could hit that club 150 yards, 3 feet off the ground both left and right handed. Best club ever made for a course on a pecan grove. Good memories!

KIII out of Corpus reports 8 fatalities so far in Rockport. I fear that is just the start as they begin to search collapsed buildings.

I guess that explains the photo of first responders cradle-carrying out the 91 year old woman from the Senior Center.
