I was wondering how many lives were being saved today with the largest Planned Parenthood clinic in the nation being closed for a week or two.

Someone took a real photo and altered it to make it look like those people were up to their chests in water.

That’s what I think. If you think different, that’s your business. Either way, I’m done with this.

https://www.harriscountyfws.org/GageDetail/Index/320?span=7%20Days&v=rainfall

The Harris County Flood Warning System will show rainfall by time and in increments as short as 15 minutes.

This rain gauge shows 33.4” of rain in the last 5 days, most of it coming in fast from 9:30-9:45 pm Aug 26 (.40”) to 4:15 am Aug 27. The gauge measured multiple 15 minute increments where almost 2” fell - per 15 minutes! (listed in reverse time):

8/27/2017 12:45 AM 8/27/2017 1:00 AM 0.56”
8/27/2017 12:30 AM 8/27/2017 12:45 AM 0.56”
8/27/2017 12:15 AM 8/27/2017 12:30 AM 1.16”
8/27/2017 12:00 AM 8/27/2017 12:15 AM 0.84”
8/26/2017 11:45 PM 8/27/2017 12:00 AM 0.64”
8/26/2017 11:30 PM 8/26/2017 11:45 PM 0.40”
8/26/2017 11:15 PM 8/26/2017 11:30 PM 1.08”
8/26/2017 11:00 PM 8/26/2017 11:15 PM 1.12”
8/26/2017 10:45 PM 8/26/2017 11:00 PM 1.24”
8/26/2017 10:30 PM 8/26/2017 10:45 PM 1.44”
8/26/2017 10:15 PM 8/26/2017 10:30 PM 1.48”
8/26/2017 10:00 PM 8/26/2017 10:15 PM 1.96”
8/26/2017 9:45 PM 8/26/2017 10:00 PM 0.60”
8/26/2017 9:30 PM 8/26/2017 9:45 PM 0.40”

And thus we see the cause of the flooding in Houston: too much rain over too long a period on flat land with poor drainage.

COE background on Addicks/Barker Flood Control Complex, released 2013, not at all reassuring.

Issues then include poorly engineered Emergency Spillways, voids under Main Spillway, seepage thru embankment, max Main Spillway discharge rate of 2000 cfs, and “damned if you release” (downstream flooding) and, “damned if you don’t release” upstream flooding.

they did some upgrades since then...but not all have been completed ..I think I read they were going to double the outflow capacity ...so lets assume they did that and its 4000 cfs......right now they are at 3000..still rising fast about 1/5 of a foot per hour

keep in mind this battle will go on for days/weeks even after the stops..and you get “normal” rainfall patterns

IIRC, city of Houston has around 40 wastewater treatment plants. Anyone heard how those are doing?

I’ve seen one story about sewage spill, don’t recall the area. That was last night. It is prudent to assume that all flood water contains raw sewage.

Governor Abbott Activates Entire Texas National Guard In Response To Hurricane Harvey Devastation

Governor Greg Abbott today announced he has activated the entire Texas National Guard in response to Hurricane Harvey, bringing the total number of deployed guardsman to roughly 12,000. These National Guardsman will assist in the ongoing search and rescue effort for any Texans in immediate danger, and will be heavily involved in the extensive recovery effort in the aftermath of the storm.

°It is imperative that we do everything possible to protect the lives and safety of people across the state of Texas as we continue to face the aftermath of this storm,” said Govemor Abbott. The Texas National Guard is working closely with FEMA and federal troops to respond urgently to the growing needs of Texans who have fallen victim to Hurricane Harvey, and the activation of the entire Guard will assist in the efforts already underway. I would like to thank FEMA Administrator Brock Long, as well as all our brave first responders for their hard work in helping those impacted by this terrible storm.”

“While this is still a dangerous situation with a long response effort ahead, the state and people of Texas are resilient,” said FEMA Administrator Brock Long. °FEMA was here before the storm hit, and we will be here as long as needed, actively coordinating the full resources of the federal government, to support Gov. Abbott and the state.”

“The men and women of the Texas National Guard are working around the clock to support all relief efforts from Hurricane Harvey,” said Maj. Gen. John F. Nichols, Texas Adjutant General. “We will not rest until we have made every effort to rescue all those in harm’s way. We will remain here as long as we are needed. I want to thank Govemor Abbott for his continued leadership and look forward to serving the great people of Texas.”

I’ve seen pics of folks in walking in the floodwater without knee, hip, chest waders and was thinking if not absolutely necessary, not a good idea.
