Hurricane Harvey Live Thread Part II
Various ^ | 8/26/2017 | Various

Posted on 08/26/2017 4:39:50 AM PDT by NautiNurse

Hurricane Harvey made landfall near Rockport TX about 10:00PM CDT Friday night. Top sustained winds were 130mph. Rockport High School sustained heavy damage when a portion of the roof collapsed. A senior housing complex collapsed. The Rockport courthouse sustained major damage with “a cargo trailer halfway in the building.” Multiple tornadoes reported in the Houston/Galveston areas. There are reports of scattered structural fires and a shooting was reported in Corpus Christi. Residents along the San Bernard River were advised to evacuate and most TX Gulf coast counties are under flash flood watches.

Many locations are under a boil-water notice. Power outages are widespread. President Donald Trump promptly granted a Disaster Declaration to Texas Governor Greg Abbott’s request. More than 700 members of the Texas Army and Air National Guards, Texas State Guard and the Texas Military Department have been activated and are positioning themselves throughout the state ahead of Hurricane Harvey and its anticipated landfall later this week. Ahead of the storm, FEMA sent supplies from its warehouse in Fort Worth to a staging point at Randolph Air Force Base near San Antonio.

There were some pretty wicked vortices in that eyewall: The “eye” was almost square at times; at others looking almost like some sort of 4-lobe fidget spinner. I don’t know how such winds are classified: They are not really tornadic, but not really “straight-line” either. ??

Saturday morning, shortly after daylight, there were multiple pro videos made assessing the local damage where Harvey made landfall. In particular, there was an aerial drone video which showed a signature “zig-zag” path of distinct destruction indicative of a tornado.

Thanks, Dolly. Local Houston weather reports anticipated improvement today as much of the heavy precipitation feeder bands are expected to be further east of Houston.

Satellite shows a substantial amount of dry air has worked its way into the storm. Meanwhile, the storm center has meandered very near the gulf waters again this morning.

Isn’t Louisiana getting hammered also? Not hearing too much about them..

always wonder about the boonie communities... remote, small, could be leveled and not much known for a bit longer than the major cities where most of the coverage is

He is saying that based on the curb and driveway. Usually a curb is only six inches high or so, which would how deep the street is. Not an expert, but do not think you can take a loaded boat through six inches of water.

Just rain in Louisiana -- there were some tornado warnings along the Gulf. There may have been a water spout or two.

But Louisiana can handle 10-15 inches of rain easily.

20-30 inches in a short period of time is insane and causes problems.

They did close K-12 schools as a precaution today... Too much rain...

New Orleans owes Houston a favor.

New Orleans is getting their share of rain from Harvey as well. They are expecting some flooding there, too.

The mayor of Houston is promoting an organization.

I don't know if I would trust Democratic and liberal mayors of large cities with a fund. It might end up in the mayor's pocket and those of his friends...

Yes, Louisiana has received multiple large squalls from feeder bands. You are correct that there has been few reports of the effects to date on Louisiana.

It is important to note that while Houston was not in the the storm's direct path, infrastructure of the nation's 4th largest city has been severely damaged by unrelenting rain and flooding. Roads are impassable, water, sewage, electricity, schools, homes, and businesses have been hit hard. One third of U.S. refineries have suspended operations due to this storm. Tens of thousands of people are displaced.

Please pray for recovery, and help out our Texas neighbors as you can.

Just like Mississippi and Alabama during Katrina.

I would consider someone like JJ Watt and his efforts.

I don't trust politicans.

FoxNews has a story about JJ Watt fundraising...

Army Corps of Engineers released water from both the Addicks and Barker dams during the night. Spokesman described this as a 1000 year flood event.
