The National Hurricane Center has issued an advisory instructing Texas residents along the Gulf of Mexico coast to "rush" their storm preparations as Hurricane Harvey "rapidly" intensifies.
All preparations for residents along the middle Texas coast should be completed today, the National Hurricane Center said. The storm is expected to make landfall around 1 a.m. Saturday.
The coastal city of Corpus Christi has so far not implemented mandatory evacuations, but Mayor Joe McComb called for people to leave in the "strongest possible terms."

I had no idea there was so much water there. When she moved I just had visions of tumbleweeds in my head.
She close to downtown. I’m thinking of the Colorado. She had a friend south of the Colorado that lost everything in some flooding about a year ago.
I’m in coastal Virginia so used to hurricanes. I know the ones that come inland here can be super bad.
Dad and Stepmom live on Padre Island. He said that they aren’t leaving. Bottom floor condo, so any significant storm surge would be extremely dangerous, but he is bull headed.

Brings back memories. It seemed like every vacation from the late 70s to the mid 90s we were chased by a hurricane out of Corpus and/or S. Padre Is. back towards my grandparents place in Houston.
Austin is either in a drought or is flooding. There isn’t much in between. Tell her to look up maps and pictures of previous floods so she’ll know what she needs to do on her street. The local news is good about keeping up to the minute reports with scrolls along the bottom of the screen and program interruptions. KXAN.com weatherman Jim Spencer is already having palpitations. Any sort of weather and he’s just beside himself so he’ll be front and center interrupting tv programs and pimping his blog.
Remind her to charge her phone and computer. Charge any batteries tonight. Have working flashlights in case the power goes out for a few hours. Fill drinking water containers. DO NOT cross flooded streets as someone dies in every Austin flood being stupid doing that. Stay home. Other than flooding, she should be fine from Harvey.
The news just now is saying winds Friday in the upper 30 mph and mid 40s Saturday. Rainfall in Austin around 15” over the weekend.
I saw a video someone had posted from South Padre a couple of hours ago and they’re already getting surf surge. Lots of stores out of gas.
If you are along a creek or wash, you probably should take precautions. If you are where water will run off instead of in to your house, you should be fine. Be careful where you park your car - a lot of times structures will be ok but low lying parking lots will flood.

It aint the rain, it’s the storm surge. Rain runs off, storm surge builds. The media is playing a Katrina. No emphasis on 12’ storm surge + 10’ waves wiping out coastal communities. Rain totals only matter 10 miles inland. They’re ignoring the coast to setup a Katrina smear campaign.
Yes they ARE this callous. I saw them do this with Iraq to give the Ds a majority in 2007.
Well, I suppose I could be wrong and Al Gore right, but I just can’t scrape up much concern for the folks in Austin seeing a storm surge.

First big wind just hit in the Hill Country (couple hours north of Austin) that slammed the back door shut scarring us and the kitties. The old dog slept through it. It’s fairly still now.
Nothing beyond 10 miles inland is threatened imo except dumbasses venturing out in floodwaters. The coastal areas are in extreme danger and should evacuate ASAP.
Austin and SA flood when we get 3-6 inches of rain . We are already expecting flooding and dealing with it .

Except for the dummies that will insist on going around the barricades. They might get some excitement.
