So there is really no announced reason why he switched assignments for that week. I can think of many reasons why this might happen other than his name. For example, somebody with more seniority wanted to do the Virginia game, or maybe he wanted to go to Pittsburgh that weekend. ESPN has certainly not said that this was to avoid offense in Virginia. One website jumped to that conclusion, and others are repeating it, but they cannot really know what is behind this.
“We collectively made the decision with Robert to switch games as the tragic events in Charlottesville were unfolding, simply because of the coincidence of his name. In that moment it felt right to all parties. It’s a shame that this is even a topic of conversation and we regret that who calls play by play for a football game has become an issue,” ESPN said.
