Well, the special-type smoke bombs seemed to have done the trick. The majority of the protest group cleared out in a hurry and there's only a relative handful of hard-core milling around.
The smoke bombs apparently create some kind of a wall which the protesters can't see through for a long time.
Sounds like a new state-of-the art product which may have many advantages over tear gas, yet still does the job.
