The U.S. Navy announced an operational pause and has begun a broad investigation after the destroyer USS John S. McCain collided with a merchant vessel, leaving 10 sailors still missing, the second such incident in as many months.
The response by the U.S. military signals the Navy believes it needs to examine whether there may be institutional problems behind the deadly collisions.
Navy Adm. John Richardson, the chief of naval operations, made the announcement about the operational pause during a nearly four-minute video message posted on Facebook Monday morning. Adm. Richardson said he also ordered a broader investigation.
I directed an operational pause be taken in all of our fleets around the world, Adm. Richardson said. I want our fleet commanders to get together with their leaders and their commands to ensure that we are taking all appropriate immediate actions to ensure safe and effective operations around the world.

Spiderman wielding a Zamboni?
I just asked myself the same thing.
WHAT DOES IT MEAN????
LOLOL.
Maybe the Navy can grab a number of sixteen year olds who just got their driver’s license. As they have proved they can navigate an auto that costs a few thousand dollars in a comparatively more dense environment, they can safely navigate a destroyer that cost millions.

Oh, okay....so this type of ‘pause’ is not unprecedented? Recent occurances were when the Bushies threw in the towel???
See this post...
Richardson wants to ensure there arent bigger problems in the fleet that may be masked by the high pace of operations there and budget uncertainties, according to a Navy official
We already have an earful of we need more money coming from the failed government run schools.
No, I didn’t. Thanks for clarification. :)
I hope Mattis is keeping Richardson up late at night. Imagine the former 4*Gen Mattis’s response if a MC armored brigade drove a couple of Bradleys over a well-mapped cliff in broad daylight destroying the vehicles and killing the marines on board. Your f(* GPS was jammed or your s$(# for brains was jammed?
At the time (Late ‘60s) I stood deck watches and got to JOOD then OOD, before going to JOOD (Junior Office Of the Deck) we had to have 30 hours (if I remember)observation on the Bridge. We also had a workbook the size on a phone book which had to be completed with a min grade of 85.You had to show proficiency of navigation, meteorology, radar navigation ,on & on. then you were qualified to be come the OOD’s gopher. once three Watch standing OOD’s signed you off you were qualified to “Take the Con”. (Senior enlisted Seaman on the bridge watched you like a hawk)
My point is this, you had 8-12 people on Bridge watch, another 20 or so in Combat Info Center, when transiting a shipping lane or harbor approaches we fired up the short vrange Radar just off the Bridge.
We ran the ship not much difference then what was don in WWII.
Have we designed these new ship with so much automation and electronic gizzmos like GPS,reduction if crews, etc that we have lost the old Watch Standing standards
It is scientifically impossible that the person McCain’s health problems could be in any way related to the ship’s problems.
Such events are what we call “coincidence”.
Names are just names and mean nothing, right?
But—could everyone be wrong about this?

Well, well, well. Are our biggest vessels just big, GLBT party barges now?
Imagine if instead of needing to prove you could drive, you got your license by attending PC training classes? Now how would you feel about 16-year olds on the road. Still on balance the 16-year olds probably have enough common sense not to go around killing themselves, though.
Good optics don’t cost that much.
Have a few people looking out the window would help to.
Any more accidents and the Navy will be in row boats.

It has nothing to do with Admiral Richardson.
Nope. Conning officer / OOD still gives rudder and speed orders.
Where they might learn some seamanship. The best Navy sailors grew up in small boats.
