DVID reports on the damage sustained by the Navy vessel:
Damage to the portside is visible as the Guided-missile destroyer USS John S. McCain (DDG 56) steers towards Changi Naval Base, Republic of Singapore, following a collision with the merchant vessel Alnic MC while underway east of the Straits of Malacca and Singapore on Aug. 21. Significant damage to the hull resulted in flooding to nearby compartments, including crew berthing, machinery, and communications rooms. Damage control efforts by the crew halted further flooding. The incident will be investigated.

Just following the same path as its namesake....crashing
Perhaps, but in both cases where were the Master and Senior Chief Petty Officers? These senior enlisted sailors have a great deal of experience.
From the impact alone, I would conclude that the McCain had the right of way and was hit from behind.
The overtaking ship has to give way to the ship being overtaken. The tanker did not give way to the McCain, the ship being overtaken.
The ship on the right has the right of way. The McCain was hit on its left side, indicating it was the ship on the right with the right of way.
But the bridge tapes and the AIS tapes will disclose what actually happened.
Obammy’s Navy.
why ban bulbous bows. They add hydrodynamic efficiency to large ships near their top speed. Time to get more alert watch officers, then what kind of bow a tanker or container ship has would be of no consequence.
I suspect that's what happened in both of these cases (the McCain and the Fitzgerald).
A UAV doesn't have a pilot. It is unmanned, which means it is piloted through external controls by someone sitting at a computer. It would seem that this sort of device would be easier to hack than anything else the military uses.
There is also AIS that shows ships around you. Recreational boaters use it all the time. However, military ships don’t use AIS . I have been boating in the Puget Sound, and all of a sudden a military ship or sub comes out of nowhere because they are cloaked. If the military is not going to use AIS, they also need to take precautions to avoid collisions.

>> “How in hell does something like this happen?” <<
This is Obama’s Navy (F Troup, Navy style)
.
Remember the old joke "How do you separate the men from the boys in the Navy?" "With a crowbar!"
Can you imagine how bad it is now after DADT, "serve openly" and "get your free sex-change here."
Where is the picture of the other ship? Maybe it was not hit by another ship, but the powers that be put this out so to make it look like an accident. We know how the government hates to give terrorists credit for attacks so maybe it is the same thing going here.
Or time to teach US Navy Captains something other than the John F. Kennedy collision avoidance technique.
“
Its interesting that relieved skipper of the Fitzgerald isnt named in any MSM reports I can find.”
Two such accidents in as many months. Keep this up and the navy will be in row boats.
Can anyone explain how the sailors “went missing?” Do they fall off from topside, get sucked out of the gash in the ship’s side? I don’t understand.
4 ships on one year? I am only aware of the last 2. What else happened?
believe that Naval vessels are exempt from the requirement to have AIS transponders.
