Its a list of demands that makes even Mariah Carey look low-maintenance.
A hefty, eight-page memo detailing what it takes to be a driver for Rep. Todd Rokita has been revealed and its not for the faint of heart.
The Indiana congressman demands that his chauffeurs double as personal assistants who greet him at pickup with a fresh cup of hot, black coffee and never be without gum and hand sanitizer.
Rokitas toiletry bag, with his toothbrush and toothpaste, is to be kept in the trunk of the car, along with a nearly 20-item supply box dubbed The Football containing an always-stocked inventory of more gum, hand sanitizer, a blue Sharpie (for signing letters), lozenges, Kleenex, a stapler, staples and a staple remover and Shout wipes.
Besides chauffeuring him, drivers must ensure that Rokita is never photographed with a drink in his hand but are asked to get Todd a non-alcoholic drink that he can carry with him when he arrives at an event.
Water, diet soda and coffee are best, the memo advised.
The Republicans diva-like demands are outlined in the internal memo titled Instructions on Staffing and Driving and obtained by Politico.
The politician is also quite the backseat driver, demanding that he be informed of turns and sudden stops and that his driver avoid sudden acceleration or braking.
The goal is to provide as smooth a ride as possible, the memo said.
A coat hanger must always be available in the vehicle so Rokita can hang up his coat or jacket.
The 47-year-old, a top contender in Indianas competitive GOP Senate race next year, also does not want to be interrupted with unnecessary conversation during his precious prep time in the car.
And dont let him forget his personal items after an event or meeting.

You don’t think it might be tongue in cheek, poking fun at himself by calling it that?
Because he tells his staff what he expects of them? That is sure a strange deal breaker.
So what exactly should their staff do? Any corporate executive expects their executive secretary or staff to have the items they will need at hand. Why should Congress be any different. I didn’t see him asking them to babysit or fetch his laundry.
You’d not vote for a man who has these conservative positions because he’s demanding of his staff? He doesn’t pass your “purity” test? Folks such as you are the very reason conservatives lose elections. (Or, perhaps you’re a troll.)
*Takes a while to type all the br's
Reminds me of Blagojevich. He referred to his bag of hair accessories as “the football”.
I agree completely. I've never had a chauffer in my entire life, yet I often keep or bring these same things in my own car. To list them in for a non-personal car seems hardly unreasonable. To call a football sized object a football is hardly presumptuous. What else would it be called?
Agreed!
This story is total BS. Todd is from my Home town in Indiana - he is a regular guy who has a good family and supports many local charities and causes. Hopefully he will be the candidate who defeats “Jackass Joe” for the Senate seat in Indiana.
Agreed. I don’t really care for this kind of personality, but I will never have to deal with him personally, so what’s it to me? I will be looking more at his and the other candidates’ records and reliability. If Rokita looks like the best bet, I will support him.
“If he votes the way we want, then at least hes *our* ass.”
Sounds like a fine ass to me. Look at all those “upstanding RINOs” we sent to Washington who do the exact opposite of what we want.
Always pays to read the fine print. Thanks for pointing it out.
***He said that Kasich was the most pompous, arrogant jerk of a politician he had ever met in his life, this coming from a person who has met more than his fair share of pompous politicians.***
My daughter also has had the misfortune to be in a servile position for Kasich, up close and personal, on one occasion. She said the same thing about him in almost the exact same words. If I recall correctly, she used “pompous, arrogant, and self-important.”
Before this “opportunity” she had thought very much of him, because she met him when she was a young girl, maybe 10. She was with her best friend and her parents, and Kasich was campaigning for Congress back then. They had gone to do some shopping, and low and behold, Kasich was there. He shook her hand, and smiled at her, and gave her some sort of compliment.
That stayed with her a long time, and I think she went into this occasion with positive thoughts of him that day. It all changed by the end of the day. She was almost bitter about him after that. He must have really been a total ass to get her to make a 180 degree turn in her view of him.
Agreed - he might well be a ego-driven fop but the info provided wasn’t enough to conclude that. Making sure to be prepared is what effective folks do.
Imagine what Hillary Clinton’s list must look like.
This “flake” sounds like the dictator of North Korea. I wonder if his drivers all have a little notebook they carry everywhere when around him to record his amazing thoughts and actions. Failure to do so will end badly.
What a worthless pile of poop he is.
If a person thinks so highly of himself and so little of the people serving under him, especially when it was someone who was volunteering, what do you think he feels about the voters who make his pompous lifestyle possible?
Oh, so true. To be clear though, my daughter was being paid for her work. At the time, she had graduated from college and was still looking for her first break in her neurophysiology career. She took on a waitressing job at a very exclusive private club in town. Kasich was holding a fundraiser effort for his gubernatorial campaign there. You might think that when someone is campaigning and asking for money, that they are courteous. This was not the case. She said that everyone in the room noticed what he had said and done, and some even gasped out loud, but then stifled themselves. Prima donna jerk.
Then let him pay for it out of his own pocket. Corporations are subject to audits and questionable expenses are eliminated. I’ve had auditors spend days auditing expense accounts and kicking out multiple items.
Congress never gets audited. Why bother, it’s not their money.
I remember Shiela J-L took a limo to work, two blocks from her house to the capitol.
You are triggered by something here. I’m not sure what. Our congress members have money to pay for staff.
If you don’t like that it’s going to be an uphill battle to change it.
What exactly do you think this congress person should be paying for? I am sure that the drinks, pens, coffee, water etc are normal expense items.
