Amazon is doing great damage to tax paying retailers. Towns, cities and states throughout the U.S. are being hurt - many jobs being lost!
This thread, sadly, reeks of liberal fascism disguised as conservative politics.
Actually it’s not Amazon’s fault.
Some of it goes back to Demming, but much can be laid at the feet of government who taxes inventory and property.
Consider the “carry cost” for an item is 20% per year. If in 4 years the item has not sold, they have paid for it twice. Some items fall into this category.
There are essentially no mom and pop stores left to die because they are uncompetitive and no longer fit to exist in the current world.

Depends on what one’s needs or wants are. Wouldn’t expect Amazon to catalogue the whole world of goods.

And their store is nearly a block long...hunting, guns, ammo, tons of other stuff.
I found a great paddleboard on Amazon and the stuff I wanted to wear on it on ebay.
Shopping should be about good oldfashioned consumer politics - pricing, customer service, selection.
Make the buyer pay the taxes directly, and enforce it.

They do in many states. Iowa made them recently. It has made ordering from say, Walgreens, more attractive as they have been collecting the taxes for a while now.
So far, they haven’t been on third party sellers. That may change.
For the record, any of you paying for packages from Direct TV or Charter are supporting CNN and friends. So don't get too comfy in your glass houses.
And don't have to wait in line for some lazy sales clerk to take their time ringing customers up, asking them if they want to sign up for a discount points card holding up the whole line, while paid by the hour.
Online shopping is another alternative to minimum wage laws.
My read is first quarter 2018 if the Christmas season is bad for them.
Which it will be. The last thing I bought at any of those stores was a carry on bag from JCP in March. First purchase there in three years.

Amazon opened two distribution centers here to get products out faster and so federal law already requires them to collect Maryland state sales taxes.
If they have no physical presence in the state then they don't have to.

Let's be as accurate as possible, please. Eric Garner was choked to death while being arrested for selling loosies, not as a punishment for selling loosies. I do not recall seeing any video that showed him significantly resisting arrest, and I do not recall reading any accounts that claimed the choke hold was necessary due to threat of violence from his resisting arrest.
Being accurate doesn't lessen the tragedy of the unnecessary death, but also doesn't inflate the incident to be an intentional death caused by trivial behavior.
Amazon is building distribution centers all across America and they are one of our nation’s largest employers. Those getting laid off at failing retailers like Sears and Radio Shack can apply for work there and at other ecommerce companies. Our nation has always seen industries come and go. Let’s face it, Amazon built a better mousetrap. Hats off to them. I think Jeff Bezos is a bozo and a blockhead when it comes to politics but he’s a genius at retail. I wish he would focus more on that. If I applied a political litmus test to everybody I do business with, I might as well build myself a shack in the woods and go off the grid.
I’ve never had a bad experience with Amazon. If I am unhappy with the product I receive, there is a no-hassle return process and my money is refunded in a timely manner. By contrast, I’ve had horrible experiences at Sears, Wal-Mart and Kohls. Glad to not have to go to those places anymore. And as I mentioned elsewhere in the thread, there are many online options for shopping that are just as good. I’m a big fan of LL Bean website for example. They are on par with Amazon for customer service.
Internet retail, of which Amazon is just the biggest player, would never have gotten off the ground without its sales tax exemption during its formative years. It is really nothing but old-fashioned catalog shopping with an internet-based catalog - but it enjoyed a 5-10% consumer net price advantage over establishment like Sears Roebuck, in a business where profit margins are often only 5-10%. The unequal tax treatment created Amazon and destroyed Sears. NOW collecting taxes is just about the revenue, not the business model.
