Explosive new report virtually pinpoints location of missing flight MH370

STARTLING new evidence has virtually pinpointed the location of MH370 — 1258 days since it disappeared.

The Australian Transport Safety Bureau has today released an explosive new report that effectively narrows the search zone for the missing plane down to an area half the size of Melbourne.

GeoScience Australia has been examining four satellite images taken in the weeks after the plane went missing in the area identified late last year as MH370’s likely resting spot.

They found 12 objects in those images that they deemed man-made and 28 that they regard as possibly man-made.

The images were taken by a French Military satellite in late March 2014 but were discarded by authorities. The ATSB were not involved in the search at that time.

The drift modelling initially released late last year identified an area of 25,000sq km just outside the original search area.

Today’s report combines a refinement of that drift modelling as well as the discarded satellite images to narrow the likely search zone down to an area of just 5000sq km.

5000 square kilometres is an interesting definition of 'nearly pinpointed' but it is a small enough area that a targeted search of the seafloor could reasonably be undertaken as I understand it.

Part of the problem is the Australian government is pretty much expected to pay for this search, even though only six Australians were aboard.

It's one thing for us to be geographically responsible for a huge area of ocean when lives can actually be saved.

But in this case...

I actually hope the government will decide to have one last look, giving this is the ATSB asking. But I wouldn't want to be the politician making the call to spend even more money on it.

"I wouldn't want to be the politician making the call to spend even more money on it."

Get Discovery Channel and National Geographic to help sponsor the search, and use the footage for a series.

Will be interesting when they do finally find the aircraft. Wonder what data will be accessible?

BTW, with all of the searching done over the past year, has anyone cataloged what other things they have found? Got to think they've found other ships, planes, and other surprises during this extensive search.

Hey, no one is blaming Bush for everything any more. Guess that is a progress.

LOL...great idea. I’m sure they’ll pay right after the next few months of more wall-to-wall coverage ends.

Well, it is such a strange case, and with terrorism such a concern, it might help everyone’s safety if we could ever find out just what did happen.

It would be a great display of Australia’s technical expertise if a new search were successful that was based on this new analysis.

I believe the Western Australian Museum (which has a Maritime Archaelogy depatment) has been doing this.

The IC has known all along where the plane was.

Planes are literally loaded with small transponders that are tracked by the NRO satellites.

Even the engines connect every few minutes to their manufacturers....and that is just cheap commercially available equipment. You can buy a tiny module made to place on a circuit board to monitor your own gear via sat, wherever it is on the planet.

The really good stuff is built into the actual integrated circuits on boards.... hard to spot, hard to detect, hard to even believe for the layman.

People have no idea...

I confess that I skimmed but not study the article, and was left with no clue where or why the plane disappeared

Maybe there’s a readers’ digest version available somewhere

All caused by a muslim.

I.e. the pilot.

This seemed clear to me from the reportage at the time, but will it be scuttled? Too late! as far as I'm concerned.

I agree with you. There is no reason that they don’t know the location of that plane. With the satellites, they can check if my car is parked outside my house. Every move a plane makes is monitored, and there is the radar, as well.

The whole scenario reeks of black ops. It is unclear to me why all sides are keeping mum. But the plane was on its way to Peking - that may be of significance.

One identifiable piece with serial numbers tracing it back to that specific aircraft was found on some island in the South Indian Ocean east of Madagascar some months ago. A whole lotta nuthin’ down there.

Not much mentioned. Found reference to two shipwrecks.

To be fair, both China and Malaysia have paid a fair share of the search costs up until earlier this year when it was finally stopped by mutual agreement - but restarting the search now would almost certainly be on Australia. We can ask for their help and they may be willing to contribute but would not bank on it.

Our best bet may be to ask for an agreement to share the costs if we actually find something - there’s a good chance they might agree to that. But not just on new speculation.
