Donald Trump: Mitch McConnell Should Have Threatened McCain, Murkowski, Collins Chair Positions

President Donald Trump believes that Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell did not do everything possible to pass an Obamacare replacement bill. When reporters asked Trump why he continued to batter McConnell despite support for the Senate Majority Leader from his Republican colleagues, he replied shortly, “Don’t make anything of it, we should have health care approved.”

He hinted that McConnell should have threatened to remove Sen. John McCain, Sen. Lisa Murkowski, or Sen. Susan Collins from their chair positions in the Senate to force them to vote for the health care bill.

“He should have known that he had a couple of votes that turned on him and that should have been very easy to handle, whether it’s through the fact that you take away a committee chairmanship or do whatever you have to do,” Trump said, offering advice for McConnell.

When will it sink in to President Trump that McConnell and the rest of the Senate could not care less what he wants? Why should they? The Senate thumbs their nose at the President and what does he do? He endorses Luther Strange for re-election.

The Senate does not like Donald Trump. They do not respect Donald Trump. They do not fear Donald Trump. And that is not going to change unless the President takes steps to change it. Endorsing an incumbent Senator is not going to do it.

I’ve made a living in sales, his body language and actions are that of a weakling, to say nothing of his negative speech. If he talks about a bill, it’s always about how difficult it is to get things done. As a ballplayer, I sure as hell didn’t walk up to the plate thinking about how hard it was to keep from striking out!

Compare his talk to Harry Reid. The Dems would take every lever of power away from anyone that dares to oppose them, don’t give a damn about discussion, etc.

McConnell is a limp d#ck

Exactly so. His entire inside-the-beltway career has been spent in navigating the levers of power for self-aggrandizement (there's even a sordid scandal from his days in the Army). He climbed the ladder by working with the UniParty and plying his talents, not for the interests of the people of Kentucky, but for the Cheap Labor Express cabal.

As for being a member of the GOP Establishment, it's really quite easy. You're the Washington Generals to the Harlem Globetrotters. Everything you do, including the faux votes to remove Obamacare, is for the rubes back home.

Nothing is as it seems to be in Congress; it's all Kabuki Theater in service to the UniParty. That's why poor little Mitch is bleating that Trump wants results. How dare he have excessive expectations!

Trump Should Have Threatened McConnell’s Position

How? Threaten him with what? Removal as majority leader? All McConnell needs are the votes of 26 Republican Senators to remain leader. That is a piece of cake for him, given the way the Senate GOP feel about the President. Issuing a completely empty threat would accomplish absolutely nothing and would just make the President seem even weaker.

Maybe what Trump needs is a health care replacement plan of his own? The ones the House and Senate have come up with are going nowhere.

Chuck Schumer would be the Senate majority leader

It wouldn’t make much difference at this point with the quisling McConnell apparently taking his marching orders from Schmucky and Pelosi.

Good point. But there must be some things Trump could threaten him with. Holding rallys in Kentucky to get people riled up? Encouraging them to melt Mitch's phones?

I dunno. I'm sure some here can think of actual, effective things.

McConnell isn't up for re-election until 2020 I think. He won't care about riled people or angry calls.

You just know McCain, Graham, and a gaggle of establishment Republicans met or communicated their group intent to neutralize Trump and discredit his Presidency. They don’t want McConnell replaced, and that is concerning.

You forget. McConnell would have to vote on her replacement.

That would have most likely resulted in those three switching to the Dems and flipping control of the Senate. Bad strategy in my opinion.

WhileI agree with you on the result, I can’t agree on the value of the strategy.

All manner of wonderful, USEFUL, optics open up should they cut and run.

Collins is up in 2020 and the other two I think 2022, with McCain likely departing the stage much earlier.

I think McCain is going to pull a Robert Byrd, ie. die in office.

Not really. That’s just theater. Behind closed doors all reports are McConnell can bust balls when the issue is important to him. Repealing obamacare isn’t obviously. The only thing important to beltway pigs like McConnell is personal power. So he plays to the progressive wing of the GOP to maintain his power.
