Death Certificate Shows Southaven Man Killed by Police Bullet to HeadWarrant Served at Wrong Address
WREG ^ | AUGUST 4, 2017 | David Royer

The death certificate for a man shot in his home by police last month confirms he died of a gunshot wound to the head from a 9 mm handgun.

The document classifies the death as a homicide, adding that it occurred by “police shooting.”

Lopez, an auto mechanic, was shot dead by a Southaven police officer while standing in the doorway of his home on Surrey Lane just before midnight July 23.

But an arrest warrant shows police were at the wrong address.

DeSoto County District Attorney John Champion confirmed two officers were responding to an aggravated domestic violence call across the street at the request of another law enforcement agency.

Police have said that Lopez was holding a weapon and cracked the front door just before he was shot.

But family members deny he was holding a weapon and attorneys for Lopez’s family say evidence show police fired through a closed door.

What amateur wrote this article? It doesn’t properly identify the man’s full name and just refers to him by his surname in first mention.

“But an arrest warrant shows police were at the wrong address.”

The cops are so stupid they do not know the difference between an Even Number and an Odd Number.

Or, the police force is made up Thrill Killing Thugs.

There is no other way to explain it.

He cracked the door and they could see he had a weapon?

Good eyesight. Considering it was dark.

Shoot first and ask questions later.

Policing at its finest.

So, you are in a strange neighborhood serving a warrant. Might it occur to you to double check the address?

This wrong address screwup seems to occur far too many times.

For anyone performing a service or conducting official business one of the most basic steps in doing the job is to first check and double check that you are at the correct location.

Make sure you don’t paint the wrong house, dig up the wrong lawn, serve a warrant on the wrong individual or bust in the wrong front door.

Don’t they teach LEO’s to verify they are at the correct address before taking action?

Common sense dictates that it would be an important and necessary part of training for every policeman and sheriff’s deputy and part of the written prcedure/checklist for taking action.

but it must not be.

One could argue that he had good reason to fear for his family's safety...

Yes.

It does not follow that he did not crack the door though.

It is interesting that prior they claimed that he opened the door to set the dog on them. Must have been a very thin dog to get through a "crack".

He wasn’t shot. He was executed.

Well, they didn’t shoot the dog, so there’s that.

Being a cop is hard.

Where are the cop suckers to tell us all how the victim ‘got what he deserved’ because he didn’t immediately grovel before the Almighty Holders of the Badge?

Nope. They teach them to do whatever is necessary to make sure that officer goes home to his family that night.

The officer did go home to his family that night; Mission Accomplished.

They should get a commendation every time they serve a warrant on the right address.

True. A lot of annoying paperwork is undesirable.

“Perhaps they need to address the muslims cop’s killing of an innocent woman in Mpls.”

My guess is that the DeSoto County (Mississippi) District Attorney does not spend whole lot of time investigating homicides in Minnesota.
