With nuclear-armed North Korea threatening to fire missiles nearby, Guam independence advocates say breaking free of the U.S. is increasingly appealing to fellow islanders.
By their own admission, independence historically has been the least popular of three options debated among residents of the approximately 160,000-person territory, which was acquired by the U.S. from Spain in 1898.
But independence advocates say support has increased dramatically in the past year, with this week's saber-rattling between President Donald Trump and the North Korean government further heightening interest.

Yeah, let these U.S. taxpayer funded parasites take care of themselves. Make them independent — they will starve to death.
idiots with out us dollars the place will die
Guam should be very well protected from NK missiles by both US and Japanese Aegis destroyers, and the full-time THAAD battery on Guam itself. It’s a LOT easier to shoot down an intermediate-range missile than an ICBM. THAAD has a very high success rate.
Independent, poor and defenseless.
Dear Guam,
Be careful what you wish for.
Please review the history of Guam pre-1945.
That is all.
“Please review the history of Guam pre-1945.”

That could apply to dozens of Pacific Islands——the region has been peaceful since then.

An inexact transcript:

Johnson: This is a[n] island that at its widest level is what twelve miles from shore to shore? And at its smallest level uh, smallest location its seven miles between one shore and the other? Is that correct?
Willard: I dont have the exact dimensions, but to your point, sir, I think Guam is a small island.
Johnson: Very small island, about twenty-four miles, if I recall, long, twenty-four miles long, about seven miles wide at the least widest place on the island and about twelve miles wide on the widest part of the island, and I dont know how many square miles that is. Do you happen to know?
Willard: I dont have that figure with me, sir, I can certainly supply it to you if you like.
Johnson: Yeah, my fear is that the whole island will tip over and capsize if it is hit by a nuke.
Willard: We dont anticipate that the nukes that Obama allowed North Korea to produce couldn’t even crater out the island. At best they would just kill every person who lives there. But their votes for president don’t count, so why would a democrat care?
I don’t blame them from being peeved over this though. The Korea thing has been mishandled from the beginning, all the way back to Clinton.

Be careful, Guam! If we remove all our troops, you will tip over for sure!
I said it on another thread.
The world was a pretty nice place for 50 years or so after we nuked Japan. It may be time we do it again.
Thats why every country in the hemisphere from Tiawan, Viet Nam, Thailand, all the way to India needs to get off their asses and do something before we have to.
The whole damn world acts like Americans dying on everyone else’s shores is the only reason we exist.
If NK nukes anyone. South Korea will become an island. America will have saved the world yet again, and I dont care how many non Americans get killed in the process.
Hello world. Time to grow up.
Well, if the US left, they’d be independent until China annexes them and starts putting in forward air bases. The resulting geopolitical vacuum would almost ensure that.
err Eisenhower.
uh ... Truman.
There are still major military facilities there, and they can’t just get all those out overnight.
NK is the mouse who roared.
They should thank their lucky stars and stripes they didn’t become a prefecture of imperial Japan.
Tippecanoe and Guam is too!
If NK hits Guam with a nuke, that will really capsize the island.
Can we sell it back to Spain and call it good?
Since they are bankrupt this would need to be a gold only transaction. :-)
