WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. Defense Secretary Jim Mattis on Wednesday told North Korea it must stop any action that would "lead to the end of its regime" and "stand down" in its pursuit of nuclear weapons.
These are some of strongest comments Mattis has made on North Korea. In the past he has said that the United States can respond to North Korea, but any military solution would be "tragic on an unbelievable scale."
"The DPRK must choose to stop isolating itself and stand down its pursuit of nuclear weapons," Mattis said in a statement. DPRK is short for the North's official name, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea.
"The DPRK should cease any consideration of actions that would lead to the end of its regime and the destruction of its people," Mattis said.
"The DPRK regime's actions will continue to be grossly overmatched by ours and would lose any arms race or conflict it initiates," he added.
Mattis added that while the State Department was making diplomatic efforts, the United States and its allies have the most "precise, rehearsed and robust defensive and offensive capabilities on Earth."

IMHO, Duvalier had a much stronger hold on reality than anyone in the NORK leadership....
Everyone is getting whipped up by the media and Trumps tweets, calm down. This hysteria is nonsense and downright dangerous.
Too many headline readers are completely ignorant of the NK capabilities. NK must be having a big laugh at all our headlines.
The most powerful NK missile, only in theory, could reach about Kansas City, with no payload bigger than a jar of kimchee.
They would have to have another missile stage added on to provide more fuel in boost.
Their best missiles so far are all truck launched. They dont have a truck big enough for a bigger missile. If they did, a bigger heavier missile would get damaged joyriding around NK.
They would have to go to a silo launch with onsite liquid fueling. Thats what every other nuclear power does that wants nukes delivered.
NK has no silos, if they did we would know. Also, all of their orbital apogee missiles have burned up on re-entry, they dont have adequate heat shields, yet.
Lets all calm down.
Before the Trump Administration makes ANY move, they have a plan that is 3-4 steps ahead of the competition, be it CNN or Hillary or North Korea.
So, for a moment, imagine the NK Leader eating with his generals. One of them drops dead. A few moments later, another one drops dead. Rinse and repeat over a week. Then, Kim Jong-un wakes from a bad night's sleep to this...
This is almost no different from the military head games Reagan ran around the Soviets in the early 1980s. It was brutally effective, without a shot being fired.
"Sometimes we would send bombers over the North Pole and their radars would click on," recalls Gen. Jack Chain, [a] former Strategic Air Command commander. "Other times fighter-bombers would probe their Asian or European periphery." During peak times, the operation would include several maneuvers in a week. They would come at irregular intervals to make the effect all the more unsettling. Then, as quickly as the unannounced flights began, they would stop, only to begin again a few weeks later.
Yea, if we go psyops, we will still get rhetoric from NK and his people remain under tyranny. However, there will be NO more missile tests (he can take a hint, and I suspect news of how that new guy in DC operates will reach China pretty fast) and NK is now neutralized.
We should keep the MOAB at the ready...pacifism won't work.
To finish the job, maybe have some Voice of America broadcasts into NK to encourage the good people of North Korea to do a Ceaușescu on lil' Kim.
Are you suggesting we wait for all those elements to be in place before we act forcefully?
Or before we notify them of the consequences of developing a nuclear strike threat to the US mainland?
No. We should confront this situation now. And we should do so stridently and clearly.
Remember, Iran and others are watching.
Area the size of Indiana
About 100 million people-—most of which do not have enough food. Money being spent on military.
We are acting forcefully, short of shooting at them.
The sanctions are going to hurt, but they take time.
We are rapidly building up an anti-missile interceptor ring around NK. Let’s perfect that, see what happens.
Lat but not least, why not vaporize the USS Pueblo? It’s our property, give them 24 hours to give it back or bomb it.
NK is more impulsive than we are, let’s play our cards from strength.
The North Koreans will probably end up dropping a nuke on China when the rocket go KADIWAMPAS on re-entry.
