Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., said Republican candidates with their eyes on a White House run may be seriously considering the prospect of challenging President Donald Trump in 2020 because they "see weakness," The Hill reported Saturday.
"They see weakness in this president," McCain told The New York Times. "Look, it's not a nice business we're in."
The Times reported Saturday that Republican Sens. Tom Cotton of Arkansas and Ben Sasse of Nebraska, GOP Ohio Gov. John Kasich, and even Vice President Mike Pence could be laying the groundwork for a White House run in 2020.
McCain hasn't been shy about criticizing the president and has broken ranks with Trump as well as fellow Republicans on key issues. Most recently, he voted against the Senate GOP's "skinny" Obamacare repeal bill and on Thursday lambasted the president over his handling of the war in Afghanistan.

Forgive me Lord, I hope he doesn’t make it that far.
No, federal offices can not be recalled.
He is an enemy
All the Never Trumpers can do at this point is try to run 3rd party candidate and throw the race to a Dems. If that isn’t weakness, nothing is.
Ben Sasse was in Iowa driving as a Uber driver because he lost a bet to a friend over a sports game - the bet was that they had to go the opposing state and wear the opposing team’s jersey while driving for Uber. The videos of this are all over the place to document this and he confirmed it previously when confronted about why he was “sighted” up in Iowa. Ben Sasse is not a Trump fan and I suppose could run for President but that is not why he was up there in this instance and the New York Times had to know this.
Besides which - what possible effect could a visit to Iowa in 2017 have for the 2020 race, right after a new President was just inaugurated? It is obviously fake news.
McCain has a penchant to be willing to screw everyone else over to screw over one person he has a personal grudge against. He actually agreed with the legislation on Obamacare he voted against in the Senate because it would serve to embarrass Trump (and probably to do it to McConnell as well - who back in the day repeatedly blocked his precious McCain-Feingold campaign finance bill) and that was his top priority - he was willing screw over his party and the rest of us to get Trump’s goat.
I don’t know about all the Trump voters... but I shall NEVER vote for an establishment republican ever again! They can run all they want and whomever they can get.. but if they are behind any person they try to get to run for office... they cannot count on my vote ever.
You didn’t help my President. You didn’t stand with him. You didn’t consider my vote... you trashed Trump and his voters. You expect to get any of them? Maybe some nitwit’s, but not mine.
As for you advising Trump, whom you have not helped at all, you sound like you are running yourself.. You can forget that.. your recent health issue will disqualify you from being considered.... you are in jeopardy...and beside that item.. I will never vote for you under any circumstances. You are not fit for any office... you are one of those who have been there too long and term limits is the answer for such as you!
How did thm GOP lawmakers running for president (including Linda Graham ) work out in 2016?
Drop dead John McCain - as soon as possible treasonous viper.
Nobody will challenge Trump in 2020. My only regret is that McCain won’t be here to see that turn of events.
I had a friend who died from it recently. She was diagnosed and gone in a couple of months, very rapid down hill after the diagnosis. The last time I visited her and her husband, she was like a zombie sitting in the chair, totally out of it. Very sad way to go.
McCain, I’ll tell you this: FUJM....
Drop dead John McCain - as soon as possible treasonous viper.
Soon he'll be Chemo Brain McCain. Even worse. And even better.
And Time is needed in re Kelli Ward. She's could replace McCain--but she has a good chance of defeating Flake, too. Maybe it'd be a waste to put her in McCain's seat...maybe this is a two-fer in AZ.
McCain will probably perish of terminal illness by 2020, the only question that remains is if the Democrats will give him a Wellstone Memorial Rally on NBC leading into the election.
So who they gonna run - guys like 2% Kasich the hunchback? Nothing but a list of losers.
So this is what a bitter, old, washed up politician looks like.

If America is lucky, McCain will be long gone before then.
