There were nearly 5,000 weapons stacked high on rows of tables and jutting out of barrels inside the Newark Police Communication Center, where state and federal authorities announced the results of New Jerseys largest gun buyback in state history.
The amnesty program held at churches in Newark, Trenton and Camden allowed residents to carry in firearms no-questions-asked.
Heres what they brought.
Assault weapons is a loaded term, but authorities say the buybacks brought in 129 semi-automatic and automatic weapons, some of which were illegal in New Jersey.
Many of those weapons are designed to pierce body armor, and getting just one of them off the street is a tremendous value, state Attorney General Christopher Porrino said.

Nylon Zytel 66, my first gun, 1973. Took it to isolated duty in AK. Sold it to a local fisherman in Kodiak that fell in love with it. 3 extra magazines and hard case thrown in all for $50. 1974. Put so many rounds through it the barrel wear started showing up in the accuracy. Fisherman didn't care but I did warn him.
Unless the State of New Jersey sold those same Guns to their Owners this is not a Buyback, it is the State violating a Civil Right by using Taxpayer Funded Confiscation.
Apparently “Shall Not Be Infringed” is a complicated phrase.
HEY NJ.COM, YOU Media Lard Butts! The weapon doesn’t pierce body armor, a round does.
“What a shame that some antique and collectible firearms will be melted down.”
They won’t be, those will be pulled and added to personal collections or auctioned off at a private auction.
I saw an Arisaka atop the pile in one pic.
Most of that stuff is low budget weaponry - just a darn shame that war souvenir Arisaka’s in the pile in photo #2.
Will never, ever live in Jersey.
Burglars LOVE these buybacks where no ID is required, no background check.
And no checks to see if the gun is stolen.
Just $100-$200 for every hot gun you have.
That is determined by what you put into the weapon.
Make for a helluva headache too.
“In New Jersey a flintlock is an assault rifle.”
A .58cal black powder rifle, 580gr ball, 1250fps, will defeat most body armor issued to cops.
Easily.
As will a regular 30.06.
Yikes ...
So a few crime guns were ditched, no doubt.
...brought in 129 semi-automatic and automatic weapons...
I want to see those automatic weapons.
And you're right, Many of those weapons are designed to pierce body armor...." Really?
NJ fencing stolen guns.
These comments are designed to pierce gun stupidity!
How many times now have we seen firearms that were supposed to have been melted down pop up later? Funny how that works. :)
I had a couple confiscated without cause in Ca that were supposed to have been destroyed pop up later at the firing range. “sorry, you can’t get it back it has have been destroyed”. One was a very nice brand new stainless Springfield 1911 I built. “That’s a nice firearm, can I take a look at it?”, The horn work was mine. :)
I saw that too. Caught my eye and had to look twice because it looked like a Springfield at first. When I realized it was an Arisaka I wasn’t quite as mad. lol
A headache — just what I don’t need :)
Steal back would be a more accurate term.
