I don’t see anything in this about the facts/evidence of the murder or Seth Rich’s access to data. All this is about who said what to a reporter. Smoke and mirrors.
Those facts should have been added to the story. That said, NPR was reporting on the lawsuit (which is newsworthy), but when it negatively affects Democrats, the media is more concerned about the process than the substance. Examples:
1. Media more concerned that Russia (who knows?) hacked DNC/Podesta than they were about the substance of the emails.
2. Media more concerned about how Devin Nunes found out about the unmasking than the actual unmasking.
3. Media more concerned about this lawsuit than about actually investigation Seth Rich’s death.
Smoke and mirrors, exactly.

A lawsuit though... opens the door to depositions, testimony, under oath, big can of worms.
A tactical error. Sure the NYT already had their follow up stories written as part of this campaign.
