That is an outrageous and blatant LIE! You do have a couple of hoops to go through, but you can purchase and keep a handgun in Canada.
It's such a difficult thing, too: Take a firearms safety course or be retired police or military with documentation in order to obtain a Possession and Acquisition Licence, join a shooting range, and ta-da, you can buy a pistol.
That sure doesn't sound like "No-how, no-way, never" to me.
Granted, there are some firearms not available here, eg pistols with barrels under 4", but there are tons of legal, available handguns in every city, province and territory.

As for the oilpatch, my stepson just bought his second house. He's a former rigpig that has gone into well servicing on his own. He doesn't seem to be suffering...
