Thank you Harry Truman, for firing one of the greatest Generals in US history, which would have not only unified Korea, but would have turned China into a peaceful republic as well.
They launch them on a nearly vertical trajectory to test the range vs a more horizontal course which may draw return fire.
Our return fire wouldn’t be inert test rounds, but most likely the contents of a boomer sub.

Filament wrapping is stronger and MUCH lighter than conventional paneling. As a result, a much greater total % of the missile weight can be devoted to fuel, resulting in much greater range.
A key measure of missile tech is if the maker can master this production technique.
Until very recently this filament wrapping was considered beyond DPRK capabilities.
The missile only went 620 miles, without a payload It will be a while before the Norks have a missile that can go 6200 miles with a payload.

If they can get to a certain orbital height, they’re considered ICBMs because that automatically gives them a certain potential range. It’s like with your car - if your car has a certain unrefueled range, it’s technically an interstate transport vehicle even if all you do is drive around your town.
It’s only trolling if the troll doesn’t have the capacity to actually harm you.
Fat boy now has an actual, working ICBM class missile. Even a dirty bomb payload on one would be hideously dangerous.
I look at “Dougout Doug” as just that. A general holed up in confusion and maybe more.
The distance it went downrange (620 miles) is a lot less important than the altitude it went to. The Japanese are saying it hit 3000km altitude.
The International Space Station orbits, repeat *orbits* at just 330-430km. If you can achieve orbital insertion, you can bring down your warheads anywhere on the planet. If not, you can trade altitude for distance, which is where the 10-11K km number is coming from.
