A homeless man was attacked by an alligator while he was bathing in a Florida retention pond Monday, officials said.
The 9-foot-alligator attacked the man around 10 a.m. in Port Charlotte, located south of Tampa, WFTX reported.
Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission identified the victim as 68-year-old Fredric Iman, who is reported to be homeless. He sustained injuries to his left foot and leg, left hand, and groin.
Official said after the attack, Iman went to a nearby surgery center where an employee called 911. In a recording of the 911 call released by authorities, the employee is heard saying "it looks like his, his pants are torn. It ate his toes off."
Iman was airlifted to Lee Memorial Hospital in Fort Myers, where his condition has improved from serious to stable.
While some neighbors were shocked at the gator attack, one told WWSB-TV she always looked forward to seeing the gator she named "Charlie"
"I'm a little upset because the gator is probably going to be euthanized," Lisa Posten said. "People that live in Florida, they know not to go in these waters, this is where these gators live."

Hor d’oeuvres?
Sometimes you eat the alligator, and sometimes the alligator eats you....you toesies.
Well, that's great, Lisa. Did you know that bears and Florida panthers live on the land? So you should know better than to go on the land too.
“I’m a little upset because the gator is probably going to be euthanized,” Lisa Posten said. “People that live in Florida, they know not to go in these waters, this is where these gators live.”
Upset over a reptile, but not upset that the guy lost his toes? People are messed up.
How exactly was the gator nibbling on toes? Was he just having a small appetizer before the main course? I'm no gator expert, but they don't seem exactly equipped to nibble on little noshes.
A pearl of wisdom from Sistapooh.
She speaks here specifically of sharks,
but the principle applies to Gators too.

You could say that. Canapés. Every few years I read about a poor person with diabetes. Rats get into their home/apartment and eat some toes
Sounds to me like it may have gotten more than just his toes.
We met people in the Florida state parks who were living on SS. Almost homeless. One couple had an old pop up and an even older PU. You can stay pretty cheap but only fot two weeks so the left for a day or two and then came back. Interesting people/ lifestyle.
Tip your waitress!
LOL
I like her! Love that hairdo too!!
Alligator's caviar!
I guess a tow truck won’t help.
Is the Gator bragging to his friends about eating a Johnsonville? Probably missing the condiments!
All fresh water is to be off-limits to swimming in Florida. A lake that has no gators one day, can be infested the next day, as they migrate.
An interesting note... George washington noted personally sighting an alligator in southern Virginia. That was before Global Cooling, er, Global Warming, er, Climate Change........
LOL, I don’t know which is worse anymore. Gators or people.
Euthanized? There were tears in the cops’ eyes when they had to put one down at the Mikosukee casino on Tamiami Trail (west of Miami) some years ago. A thief robbed casino patrons at gunpoint, and, when pursued, jumped into a nearby lake, only to be killed by its resident ‘gator.
The cops were saying “Kill him? That ‘gator should be given a medal.”
Gator just wanted a little ‘toe jam’
