Transsexuals need continuously and carefully monitored hormone treatments to survive. The military is no place for a medical problem like that.

In fact, the standard is (or used to be) that no one with any medical condition requiring ongoing treatment or medication can enlist. It is a violation of the UCMJ to conceal or fail to disclose any such condition, and is prosecutable as fraudulent enlistment. When I was at MEPS being processed to go to bootcamp, we were repeatedly and continuously warned against fraudulent enlistment, and warned of the consequences if we engaged in it.

This was strict procedure as part of medical processing, as in the past people would enlist in the military concealing various ailments (including cancer and others), for the sole purpose of getting free treatment.

Gee, what about the cost to the military, which greatly exceeeds average medical costs, and is elective and voluntary?

And, what about down time or unreliability due to hormonal fluctuations? And when does the surgery come into play?

Can hetero-normal people demand elective surgery from the military, like nose or boob jobs? I think not.

McCain, who is so quick to pull out the military card, ought to have concern for its efficiency, not to mention morale.
