Trump's DOJ gears up for crackdown on marijuana
The Hill ^ | 07/23/17 | By Lydia Wheeler

The Trump administration is readying for a crackdown on marijuana users under Attorney General Jeff Sessions.

President Trump’s Task Force on Crime Reduction and Public Safety, led by Sessions, is expected to release a report next week that criminal justice reform advocates fear will link marijuana to violent crime and recommend tougher sentences for those caught growing, selling and smoking the plant.

Sessions sent a memo in April updating the U.S. Attorney’s Offices and Department of Justice Department (DOJ) component heads on the work of the task force, which he said would be accomplished through various subcommittees. In the memo, Sessions said he has asked for initial recommendations no later than July 27.

“Task Force subcommittees will also undertake a review of existing policies in the areas of charging, sentencing, and marijuana to ensure consistency with the Department's overall strategy on reducing violent crime and with Administration goals and priorities,” he wrote.

Criminal justice reform advocates fear Sessions’s memo signals stricter enforcement is ahead.

“The task force revolves around reducing violent crime and Sessions and other DOJ officials have been out there over the last month and explicitly the last couple of weeks talking about how immigration and marijuana increases violent crime,” said Inimai Chettiar, director of the Brennan Center's Justice Program.

“Spoken like some bereft of ideas and forced to attack the opposition instead of addressing the argument”

Lol

There’s a name for you - liberal Democrat.

I am literally laughing out loud at your diminished capacity attempt to sound profound.

You’re not the brightest bulb in the lamp, are you?

Trump did campaign on Law and Order, but also said many times that marijuana laws should be up to the states.

That said, you are 100% correct that Congress needs to act. 29 states and DC have legalized marijuana for medical use and a handful have also legalized for recreational use. It’s time that Congress adjusted the laws to give these states the right to do so. Right now, they are just thumbing their nose at federal law and the DOJ has (up until now) been told to lay off enforcement.

The problem with this is that giving the states back their rights requires Congress to do something and what’s the likelihood of that?

For quite a while I had been hoping that since he recused himself from the Russia investigation, behind the scenes Sessions was readying investigations/charges for Hildabeast et al...

Trump himself ruled that out in November. See post #26. Maybe people need to stop trashing Sessions for a decision made by Trump, or show us where Trump changed his decision.

Trump wants an investigation of Hillary Clinton destroying 30,000 classified emails. Sessions is afraid of her. Trump needs to fire him and appoint Guiliani or Christy as AG. He’ll then get the investigation he wants and hopefully she gets Leavenworth.

Yep. Absolutely central in both the primaries and the general election. A watershed moment that will go down in the history books as defining the course of our history.

“try hard and see if you can come up with a less responsive and more irrelevant answer.”

Firing is not irrelevant, but I hope you can find the answers you seek. As for me I’m backing Trump as I have since the first day he announced. Speculation and fake news isn’t going to change that.

I think this is a good start, but what he really needs to focus on is prosecuting people who pull tags off of matresses.

You don’t think people get killed over marijuana?

People got killed over alcohol when that drug was illegal - and stopped getting killed over it when it was relegalized.

That CNN producer was spot on when he said Americans are stupid. All this bashing Sessions because he is following the law, his job... over ‘pot’... seriously.. the really stupid ones blame God for their addiction. Congress passed the law and whichever president in office at the time, signed their laws..

Obama set the precedent for what pot does to ones brain. Stuck on stupid!

How about you spend more time investing left wing organizations actively trying to destroy all of western civilization and less time investigating surfer dudes.

Speculation and fake news isn’t going to change that.

Lol, it's you and others who are dealing in fake news. I'm going by what I know Trump has said on specific issues, or not said. And I know if he disagrees with some DOJ priority, he can definitely have the priority changed. Or, he can approve or reject department plans ahead of time.

Funny how so-called "conservatives" suddenly become big fans of an overreaching federal government when it comes to squashing the will of voters in states who went to the polls and legalized something we never voted to prohibited in the first place.

For some "conservatives" constitutionalism is not a principle but a tactic: to be used only when it advances a predetermined end.
