Not every pilot is a Red Baron. That does not kill them all not so good pilots. I have done some flying in a 2 seater plane myself. The only place I was in danger was during landings. A plane does not crash at 5000 feet. There is nothing to crash into at 5000 feet. His plane may have been at fault more than his flying skills.

But you have no evidence and I have no evidence of exactly why his plane crashed NOT WHILE LANDING on a runway. Just leave it at that.

The cause of the crash was thoroughly vetted at the time. Even though it worked out well for Hillary, his poor judgment in flying that particular plane right after getting a leg cast removed and boldly taking off into a hazy dusk sky are the reasons he and the two sisters died. Inexperience, poor judgment, tragedy.
