The state's emergency management agency said the threat to the islands from the rogue nation is "currently assessed to be low."
But officials added ongoing North Korean missile tests and growing public concern have prompted officials to work on preparedness and disaster management plans.
Vern Miyagi, administrator of the emergency management agency... said, the public should see the preparation and education much like the work being done to prepare the public for hurricane and tsunami...
Earlier this month, North Korea tested an ICBM missile, drawing condemnation from the US and other countries. Experts say an ICBM like the one North Korea launched could reach Alaska and possibly even Hawaii.
The state plan considers what is currently a worst-case scenario: A 15-kiloton nuclear weapon detonated 1,000 feet above Honolulu.
In that scenario, public service announcements will tell residents, people should "get inside, stay inside, and stay tuned."

Remember the 1950’s ‘Bert The Turtle’? Duck and Cover baby!
Can’t they get a Democrat federal judge to issue a peace bond or sumpin’?
Obama says you can all go stay with him at his walled-in house in Maryland.
Just, you know, so Hawaii knows, as I’m sure it is something that likely slipped their mind, but Anchorage is 300 miles closer to North Korea than Hawaii. Just saying.
Oh, and doesn’t have the Pacific fleet pretty much everywhere around it.
Maybe they can stop thinking about which pronoun to use (”ze”)
and whether transgenders can use girls’ bathrooms,
and start thinking seriously about life.
Set it off offshore underwater. Surf the big, hot waves!
You’d think voting Communist since 1954 would get them some kudos from Fat Boy in Pyongyang. No dice. Aloha !
I remember those days, we did it at least 3 times a week, some weeks every day.
Then Kennedy was assassinated and we never did it again.
Weird huh?
I was in the 3rd grade and even I asked why.
Guess Cronkite couldn’t be bothered.
If the Hawaiians build nuke proof shelters, wont the island flip over from all that weight?
Pure, 100%, aged in the keg BS. The US military has been hardening against EMP since the 1960's. Research a Faraday Cage. Civilian electronics will take an a$$reaming, but in Hawaii, they belong to democrats, so, who cares?
It’s not like they’re doing nothing, they are passing out SPF 50,000 and welding shields. Their future’s so bright, they gotta’ wear shades.
IDIOT !
That is where they are going, IDIOT !
My aunt, cousin and family are there. Ironic my uncle was a nuclear defense scientist....
Communists will cheerfully shoot other communists. Just look at the Sino-Soviet border wars for ample proof of that.
Since Hawaii is (much) nearer the equator, a rocket fired from N. Korea towards HI requires less fuel than one fired towards AK.
And Honolulu is a much higher-value target than Anchorage.
Regards,
Are they all confessing their sins and seeking their souls’ salvation?
I have lived here for nearly half a century . At this point , things are so politically hopeless in Hawaii that I genuinely believe only a second Pearl Harbor -like event will shake the government here and it’s people out of their Liberal la-la land mindset . It’s beyond ridiculous . Some reason to declare martial law and to suspend civilian government for awhile would work for me just fine . A suspension of the vast tide of tourism would be a great relief on the aina and the resources.
If it all ended up with a restoration of The Kingdom , led by warriors and not the lawyers and civil service nitwits , I would not mind that outcomes . Sign me up .
Any attack on Hawaii would be the last day of existence of the Kim dynasty in NORKland . Maybe the fat ,little punk can come up with some carriers and Zeros , instead of his crappy little missiles .
Other than this , President Trump needs to really put the hammer down on this little state of ours . The lunatics are running paradise into the ground . I wish the U.S. military would take charge . I’d sign on with their mil-civil admin the very next day .
Good to hear that. An even more likely case of EMP use will be over South Korea. Another question is to what extent has North Korea hardened its own electronics, military and communications networks.
BUT BUT Wawaii wants to remove themselves from America. HAHAHA
Go pound sand!
