Shattuck: Cancer doesn’t know what it’s up against in battle with maverick
The Boston Herald ^ | 07-20-17 | Tom Shattuck

Posted on 07/20/2017 3:19:34 AM PDT by calvincaspian

His North Vietnamese captors told him he’d never go home.

They beat and tortured him to no end, but the Navy flyer’s patriotism manifested itself in historic defiance, refusing to do the easy thing for his own reward.

He would not accept freedom before other prisoners who’d been there longer than he: It wasn’t the right thing to do, he thought.

Instead, he gave the enemy hell.

Now he has brain cancer.

And he’s 80 years old.

It’s the appropriate time to loudly honor this war hero for his toughness and resolve in combat and captivity, but subsequently during his political career.

He has shown an integrity and individualism that goes unduplicated in modern politics.

.... I have an incurable case of Christianity, which has resulted in a disposition to love my neighbor as myself.

McCain isn't your "neighbor, he's yours and my enemy, and personally I don't wish my enemies well. BTW How did you answer the two part multiple choice question in my original post to you? "A" or "B"?

You’re entitled to your opinion. But don’t be afraid to show a little class.

I’m pretty sure his crimes have been well documented.

He has done a lot of bad, bad things, like turn his back on the families of POWs when he was shown evidence of their presence in SE Asia AFTER the war was over.

He hurt all those families, and he did it for political gain.

Around here, that earns the title “Doosh”.

Wishing ill to someone who is doing poorly is just about the creepiest thing going on. Berating Tax-Chick for her excellent posts that don’t spew bile, but are compassionate says everything about YOU. Get some help, seriously.

My son had a friend who had this cancer. He was in his forties. The guy had a horrible painful death.

He tried to fight it to no avail.

Thank you for your sanctimonious virtue signaling. I see you are a “Compassionate conservative” the likes of which are helping ruin the country.

It took my dad at 68. He was diagnosed in August and dead four months later. One day he just stopped eating and the end came quickly after that.

He had been battling cancer of one type or another for a decade. He didn't try to fight this one. Pain relief was the focus at this point.

If I were to identify Sen. McCain as my personal enemy, that would simply oblige me to love him more and pray for him more diligently. “But I say to you, love your enemies, and pray for those who persecute you.”

I wish you well in your philosophy, but I believe it would give me indigestion.

I’m willing to respect what he did as a POW. I am not willing to respect what he has done since his release.

A friend in his 80s died of cancer recently. He was a walking definition of “Christian man”. I respected him enormously.

McCain? Having cancer now doesn’t erase his despicable behavior since his release. When he dies, be it next week or 15 years from now, I won’t grieve for him. He had more years to live than many good men, and he used the years badly.

I completely disagree. McCain himself deserves no sympathy for what he has done. The only sympathy that should be given is to his family. Losing a loved one is difficult.

Know having said that, one can pray for their soul and that they repent for their sins, but one does not need to be sympathetic to the person to do so.

Hope he recovers. Still can’t help to think that he purposely lost the 2008 election.
