Vice President Mike Pence has stated that President Donald Trump will eventually move the United States embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, a symbolic gesture meant to convey that Jerusalem is Israel's capital.
Speaking at the Christians United For Israel Summit in Washington, D.C. on Monday, Vice President Pence assured attendees that President Trump would move the embassy soon.
"I promise you that the day will come when President Donald Trump moves the American embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. It is not a question of if, it is only when," stated Pence, as reported by Jewish News Service.
"Standing in Jerusalem, in that ancient and holy city, our president declared for all the world to hear that under [Trump's] leadership, the United States of America 'will always stand with Israel."
Pence's remarks were part of CUFI's two-day Summit event, held Monday and Tuesday at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center.
In a statement released in advance of the Summit, CUFI described the event as "the premier pro-Israel event of the year," imploring supporters to "join us in our nation's capital to stand with Israel and the Jewish people."
"In just two days, you will receive a master level knowledge of the most up-to-date state of affairs in Israel and the Middle East from some of the most compelling experts in the field," stated CUFI.
In addition to Pence, other notable speakers for this year's Summit included former U.S. Ambassador John Bolton, Cornerstone Church Senior Pastor John Hagee, Congressman Trent Franks of Arizona, Senator John Cornyn of Texas, and via satellite, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, among others.
Pence's remarks before CUFI come over a month after Trump signed a waiver delaying the movement of the embassy to Jerusalem, echoing the practices of past recent presidents.
"His predecessor, Barack Obama, signed the same six-month waiver eight times during his tenure. Former Presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush also signed the waiver," reported Politico.
"In 1995, Congress passed a law that mandated moving the embassy to Jerusalem. But presidents can sign six-month waivers to delay the move, and have done so ever since."
Will this be right after ObamaCARE is repealed,
and the Iran deal is reversed?
No, right after the tax cuts.
Sooner the better!
Maybe we should wait five months when the waiver has to be renewed to see if Mike Pence is telling the truth.
It won’t be the first time Pence has promised a religious group one thing and then turned around and betrayed them. In 2015 Pence signed the Indiana Religious Freedom Restoration Act and then turned around and signed an amendment watering down the Act after bending over to queer outrage.
Donald Trump promised to move our embassy to Jerusalem during the campaign. The betrayal (or not) is even more on his hands than on Pence’s.
Why not now?
I was always against it. It’s time. Too many Arabs don’t want peace. Moozlems. Might as well rub their noses in it.
As a real estate guy, Donald Trump knows the importance of a clear land title better than anyone.
Politically, there are two reasons why it may never happen at all during Trump's term in office:
1. It has nothing to do with "Making America Great Again."
2. It's only an important issue to a vocal minority of Republicans and a bunch of Jewish Democrats who voted overwhelmingly for Hillary Clinton anyway.
The Jerusalem Embassy Act of 1995 (Note date) is a public law of the United States passed by the 104th Congress on October 23, 1995.... It was passed for the purposes of initiating and funding the relocation of the Embassy of the United States in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, no later than May 31, 1999......
The act also called for Jerusalem ‘to remain an undivided city’ and for it to be recognized as the capital of the State of Israel.
Israel’s declared capital is Jerusalem, but this is not internationally recognized, pending final status talks in the IsraeliPalestinian conflict. The United States has withheld recognition of the city as Israel’s capital. The proposed law was adopted by the Senate (935), and the House (37437).
Since passage, the law has never been implemented, because of opposition from Presidents Clinton, Bush, and Obama.
When Elijah comes.
Other than funding the U.S. State Department and authorizing Federal expenditures for the staffing and upkeep of our embassies, Congress has no role in foreign policy that would ever allow it to dictate terms like this.
P.S. — That law also included a provision under which the State Department’s budget would be cut if the embassy wasn’t moved by the 1999 deadline. Congress has never followed through on this enforcement mechanism, so I think it’s safe to recognize the Jerusalem Embassy Act of 1995 for what it was: useless political pandering.
All the Presidents have kicked this down the road. I don’t think that’s going to change even with Trump.....the fall out in light of the ME storms doesn’t lend itself to so until the tensions and conflicts are more conducive.
“Sooner the better!”
The thing of it is, the arabs are going to scream, yell, protest, no matter if the American Embassy is moved to Jerusalem or even if it isn’t. Actually the response of the arabs to just about everything reminds me of the democrats.
The Muslims scream and yell about everything. Might as well do what we want.
“...bending over...”
Hmmm...pun? LOL
Can someone articulate why Tel Aviv isn’t suitable?
Good afternoon.
“Can someone articulate why Tel Aviv isnt suitable?”
The ancient capital of Israel is Jerusalem. Tel Aviv about 70 years.
Hope that answers your question.
