Opioid, Schmopioid

...

legal or not, using opioids is just plain stupid. Compared to an opioid user, a man who punches himself in the face looks smart.

That's why I roll my eyes and change the channel when hectored about this so-called epidemic. If you want to talk about an epidemic, talk about zika or bird flu. Opioid addiction comes from a decision, not a virus. No mosquito can infect you with opioid addiction, and you don't need antibacterial soap to avoid catching it. To speak of it as an epidemic and to speak of addicts as victims is to stack the rhetorical deck for the view that addictions and overdoses are diseases rather than choices.

And that brings us to Middletown, Ohio, ... A city councilman there ... has proposed that the city’s EMTs simply ignore 911 calls from any overdosing addict who has already received Narcan from the city twice before. Three strikes, says his proposal, and you’re out. The very suggestion has, of course, prompted a tsunami of hate mail from people with lots of tattoos.

...

And if my cold-hearted attitude means that more opioid users die, my answer is a big, fat so what? If they don’t want to die, they shouldn’t abuse opioids. If an addict doesn't care about his own life, why should I?

...

You who tell us we have a duty to rescue every user, you who say we should give him a government program and pay a regiment of social workers for his benefit, you are the same people who portray the addict’s drug use as something other than a conscious decision.

...

Save our EMTs for real victims of real diseases.

We touch our eyes between 2000 and 3000 times a day, upwards of 5 times a minute. It’s the number one way we introduce random crap into our blood stream, it’s the big disease vector. He touched his eyes.

“Complete myth, utterly false. It’s not absorbed through the skin, whatever TV show sold you that bill of goods lied to you, never watch it again.”

~~~~~~~~~~~~
This happened where I live:
http://www.wsaz.com/content/news/Deputy-given-Narcan-after-opiate-exposure-during-OD-call-433999793.html
I don’t care if it is absorbed through the skin or absorbed through mucus membranes - the result is possible overdose or death to first responders - besides almost all EMTs and cops wear gloves when they respond to overdoses.
What I worry about is the potential for bioterrorism here. Suppose an evil person dusts grocery stores or other public places with this stuff? Or a stupid addict leaves it on their coffee table while their toddler gets it all over them? The possibilities are endless with such a deadly substance.
What happens if they build a bomb with any of the nukes that went into the wild when the Soviet bloc collapsed? It’s a dangerous world, we’re on a temporary pass.
“Clearly also written by someone without any knowledge of addictions.”
Addiction is binary.
Your either choose to be addicted, or you choose not to be addicted.
Addicts should not be coddled. They should be discarded until they realize the error of their ways.
If they get clean, they should be welcomed back. If not, forgotten.
EMTs and cops wear gloves when they respond to anything. In this AIDS and herpes world not wearing gloves will get you killed.
Suppose an evil person dusts a grocery store with anthrax. Or any of a million other nasty things. Any amount of opioid will kill a toddler. The possibilities are ALWAYS endless. I can kill a building full of people with seemingly random crap from the hardware store. Life is fragile, the list of ways to end it infinite.
If they are talking about Pat and Vanna, it might not be the victim that’s too old. ;P
You are speculating as that is not what the article said. Even if you weren’t there is no disputing that this stuff could be easily weaponized into something that does to us what we do to fleas when we flea bomb the house.
The reason people get addicted is because, as a non-addict, they have no conception of how powerful and addiction actually is. They figure they won’t get addicted because they’re not stupid, or what not.
E.g., Many folks said “I’ll just quit smoking when I get out of high school.” For the addict chance is low. There is currently no way to determine, in advance, the degree of someone’s addictive nature.
Addiction is a pyschosomatic experience. Non-addicts can’t comprehend addiction anymore than someone who has been blind from birth can comprehend color.
Opioid addiction comes from a decision, not a virus.
I've been saying that about drug addiction for about 40 years.
The difference is that nukes are expensive and this is very very cheap.
“I understand the desire to punish drug users”
That’s nonsensical and irrational and based solely in emotion.
There’s a desire to discard them and leave them to their fate.
That’s rational and unemotional.
I’m not speculating, I’m bothering to understand basic behavior and biology. He touched his eyes, the article was not written by an all seeing all reporting god, they skipped a step. We touch our eyes, we touch our eyes constantly, you’ve probably touched your eyes at least once while reading this or typing a response. It’s what we do. The skin CANNOT absorb opioids, our eyes with their basically exposed blood vessels can. He touched his eyes.
Lots of stuff can be easily weaponized. Welcome to the mid-20th century.
Simple choice of will?
The success rate for AA/NA is less than 6%. Guess the other 94% and their families just lacked the will.
Not really and not really. And nukes can be pretty compact too.
Did not like this article.
Some doctors hand out bottles of opioids like candy. If a person didn’t UNDERSTAND opium, they might keep taking the pills, which do cry out from inside your brain for more, ujntil the bottle was done. Then feel horribly sick when the last one was gone. Until they remember their spouse once had some for a dental procedure that he never used. Good, another bottle. After that the person is addicted for sure, and the addiction can talk louder to them than what used to be rationality.
It’s not kind to treat people like that the same as someone who decided to shoot up heroin one day cause a friend did.
Every adult should study opiates before he is ever offered one from a doctor, and should know how to counteract the drug asking for more when the surgical or back pain is gone.
I love opiates for their complete pain relief when necessary. I’m grateful to Gd for them. But I know ALL about opium and I know exactly when to cold turkey STOP — while I still have full rationality and my own brain in charge — and so I have no fear of myself becoming addicted should I need it again.
Whew! A lot of deflection in that paragraph!
Doesn’t change the fact that this is a deadly threat to the public at large - we should give the death penalty to those that bomb buildings and endanger people with anthrax - or the other deflectives you mention.........so why don’t we give the death penalty to anyone who sells this crap that kills?
One difference is that addicts make the choice to endanger their lives - people working in a building that gets bombed make no such choice. They are true victims. The addict makes a choice to possibly die because of their own actions - while endangering the lives of innocents around them. Perhaps, that should warrant it’s own “death sentence” as well.
White folks are more likely to get addicted to opioids than any other group. Kids use them as party drugs. Mexican dealers target white people with free/cheap product to get them hooked. They lace pot or use heroin saying it’s something else.
I’d be very careful blaming addicts and saying, “To Hell with them.” Could easily be someone you know and love - or you - in the same boat after an accident or raising kids in today’s culture.
Similar to alcoholism. Ton of people drink. A certain percentage are going to become alcoholics. Certain percentage of those will die from it.
Big money making for pharma and wiping out the white working class.
Some lib even said we needed more whites dying from drug addiction to change the demographics in this country. Said it in a public speech, too.
