Russia builds small missile ships of Karakurt project at the Zelenodolsk plant named after A.M. Gorky. The Russian Navy plans to receive 18 of such ships. The new ships are said to surpass their predecessors in their combat power and seaworthiness. They are believed to become the new formidable weapon to strengthen Russia's maritime borders and enhance the presence of the Russian Federation in the Mediterranean Sea.
The ships are named "Karakurt" after a species of spiders from the genus of black widows, whose bite can be lethal to animals and humans. The new ships, 60 meters long and ten meters wide, can travel at 30 knots and remain in autonomous navigation up to 15 days.
In the future, Karakurt ships will comprise a powerful group of missile ships. Their production takes about a year and costs less than the assembly of destroyers and cruisers, and they are slightly inferior to the latter in their combat capabilities.
The work to build the new vessels is conducted as part of the nation's efforts to upgrade its navy within the scope of the state armament program, which is to be implemented from 2018 to 2025.
Victor Murakhovsky, editor-in-chief of Arsenal of the Fatherland magazine, chairman of the Military-Industrial Commission of the Russian Federation, answered questions from Pravda.Ru correspondent.
"What is unique about these ships? Do they designate Russia's priority in the navy?"
"Yes, they are small class ships with a displacement of less than a thousand tons. At the same time, they carry powerful missile high-precision weapons: the Caliber-NK systems, which can be loaded with long-range cruise missiles. We've seen the system in action in Syria. A Karakurt ship can also carry tactical anti-ship missiles and anti-submarine weapons. This is a universal complex, but with an emphasis put on capabilities of long-range impact. Plus the ship carries antiaircraft weapons for self-defense, as well as air attack weapons and artillery weapons. This ship is, of course, for the near maritime zone, that is, it is not intended for ocean voyage. It is being built on several shipyards at once, including in the Crimea."
"I think that these are the ships, which chairman of the collegium of military industrial commissions Dmitry Rogozin called "muscular." It is capable of striking targets at long distances both at sea and on the ground. New Russian corvettes and frigates will be equipped with state-of-the-art high precision weapons. They will model the capabilities of US aircraft carriers, but will be a lot more advantageous."
What military analyst has said that navies are obsolete? They are too easily fixed, found, fought and finished.
PT boats were 70-80 feet in length.
These guys are 200 feet. A whole different class.
What makes something a blue-water vessel in your opinion? To me, a 200 footer is going to be able to sail anywhere in the world in nearly any sea state. And it can fight in 99.5% of those conditions.
The Russians are the most paranoid people on the planet. If they channeled energy elsewhere, they would be an incredible country. At least the women will always be among the best.

I recall reading somewhere about the Soviets being down to nothing except for a group of Katusha rocket trucks to defend against a squad of German tanks on a flanking maneuver south of Stalingrad (IIRC).
The Katusha volley obliterated and stopped the German advance.
You're not paranoid if everyone really is out to get you. And with their history, the Russians have reason believe everyone is out to get them. We never had to fight for our country's existence in the rubble of Chicago. There are still Russians alive (not many) who remember doing exactly that in Stalingrad. The disadvantage of that mindset led to the downfall of the Soviet Union. They never really stopped fighting the Great Patriotic War; their economy was on a continuous war production footing. You can do that for five years while you are driving the Fascist beasts back to their lair.

There’s a great video out there of one of those launching a TOW at the house where Uday and Qusay were holed up, from which they were removed at room temperature.
Russians tend to forget that their country, under the Tsar, the Politboro, or today’s regime, have invaded Ukraine, Crimea, Afghanistan, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Poland, Finland, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Mongolia, The Ottoman Empire, China, Sweden, and Holland. Many were subjugated for long periods of time and most were attacked more than once. Germany would have been invaded in the 1940s too if Hitler hadn’t struck first.

You have to make purchasing power adjustments to GDP figures. Russia would crush NY state in a war or a competition to manufacture weapons.
And they were invaded by Teutonic Knights, Mongols, Tatars, Turks, Swedes, Poles, French, British/French/American/Japanese and Germans. It’s a messy history. They tend to go to war a lot, without the benefit of any natural feature to act as a barrier. Their history tells them that military weakness is a very bad thing. And no, they do not play nice in the sandbox with other countries. They are a$$holes, they know they are a$$holes, and they are quite proud of being a$$holes. They view a$$holery as a national asset.
It's like I always tell my wife ... I object to being called a "$hithead". I've worked hard to get the way I like myself, so I demand respect: I'm "Captain $hithead" and I'm in line for a promotion to "Major $hithead".
