And let's not forget that in the 1800 election, Team Jefferson called Adams a hermaphrodite, senile and insane, and was also was accused of ordering the minister of France to bring back young girls for him.

Team Adams called Jefferson a dishonest lawyer who cheated his clients, soft on immigration and would flood the country with French and Irish "refuse of Europe," and an atheist who would confiscate family bibles.

The fake news of 1800 called Jefferson, a Virginia aristocrat and slave owner who lived luxuriously at Monticello, a "man of the people." Adams, a farmer's son who despised slavery and lived frugally in common style and means, was called an aristocrat who would enslave ordinary people.

So far, 2017 isn't all that different from 1800.

Yeah, things are still normal, it's just the technology that's different. I recently read Mark Twain's autobiography, and if you swap "telegraph" for "internet," and "Chautauqua circuit" for "talk show," his life as a public figure sounds just like today. It was an era where it was normal for the President to say, "I don't believe the American people want a gelding in the White House."
