James Hansen’s controversial sea level rise paper has now been published online

**SNIP**

A lengthy, ambitious, and already contested paper by longtime NASA climate scientist James Hansen and 16 colleagues appeared online Thursday in Atmospheric Chemistry and Physics Discussion, an open-access journal published by the European Geosciences Union. The paper, entitled “Ice melt, sea level rise and superstorms: evidence from paleoclimate data, climate modeling, and modern observations that 2 ◦C global warming is highly dangerous” is now open for comment — peer review in this journal happens in public.

And given how much attention the work has already received, it’s likely to generate plenty of comments from fellow scientists.

The study raises the possibility of a more rapid rate of sea level rise in this century than forecast by the U.N.’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, whose research is widely regarded as the gold standard of climate research — but also often criticized for being too conservative.

“Where does the water come from that will raise the level of the oceans? Not from the oceans. From the air? How much rain do you think is needed. From melting ice and snow? How much ice and snow must melt”

Doesn’t water expand when it freezes?

“— Kevin (the missing heat is hiding at the bottom of the ocean) Trenberth of the National Center for Atmospheric Research — strongly criticized the study, saying that “there are way too many assumptions and extrapolations for anything here to be taken seriously other than to promote further studies.”

Lol, he pretty much summed up all of climate science.

Waaaaaait a minute. According to Scholastic.com some mountains are getting taller...

Mount Everest, for example, is the highest mountain in the world. And it is still growing about 1 inch (2.5 cm) every year.

What gives? How can mountains be growing and sea levels rising at the same time?

They have been given billions of dollars to prove that man is no good.

Slight correction. They have been given billions of dollars to prove that *capitalist, free men* are no good and that humans can only thrive under full government totalitarian socialist control.

“It’s not just ice and snow. Water expands when it gets warmer, so the sea levels would rise in a global warming scenario even if there were no glaciers melting.”

It’s not just thermal expansion, sea floor is sinking hence the dubious “GIA” adjustments of sea level graphs.

(Zwally 2015) “Gains exceed losses” of Antarctic glaciers means that all sea level calculation prior to this paper are wrong. Antarctic is taking from the ocean not adding.

Also: Hard to imagine the oceans getting much warmer with global glacial icy waters gushing into them.

Because of colliding tectonic plates.

“Where does the water come from that will raise the level of the oceans? Not from the oceans. From the air? How much rain do you think is needed. From melting ice and snow? How much ice and snow must melt?”

The Warmist theory is: that the land glaciers (Antarctica, Greenland, etc) will melt and cause the sea level to rise. The melting of sea ice has no net effect on sea levels.

In addition: the warming of the global oceans cause a thermal expansion of the ocean causing even more rise.

A recent paper by a Warmist (Zwally, NASA) basically states that land glaciers on Antarctica are NOT melting so therefore are NOT causing sea level rise, as a matter of fact,as the interior glaciers grow, they subtract from sea level rise. This contradicted the “consensus”.

As cya Zwally stated in his paper that “someday, if something isn’t done” Antarctica will melt.

Most of the sea level graphs you see today are complete over adjusted bunk. Prior to 2003 there was NO global ocean temperature nor heat content data, just guessing.

There’s enough ice on land to, if all melted, raise the ocean by 180 feet.

For Kevin Trenberth to criticize a climate change/global warming/sea-rising paper, it’s got to be REALLY, REALLY, REALLY bad, basically complete fantasy dressed up to look “scientific”.

Better get some serious fire engines down there to put out all the volcanoes.

Bingo. You are the first on this thread to win the prize.

Movement of the earth affects sea level at any particular measuring site far more than the quantity of water in the ocean. The Caribean and Florida, the Mediterranean Sea, many areas have been sinking faster than the DNC.

Land above sea level is so much less than the ocean. So any movement of that land is more significant than water in the ocean. Second, the ocean floor is land. Any movement of the ocean floor is much more significant than the quantity of water above it.

Third, if an ice cap were to start melting, it is easy to stop and reverse with no massive government program. Climate change believer Elon Musk just needs to shoot one of his rockets over the pole and put reflective confetti in orbit. It will reflect the summer sun back and drop the temperature as much as the quantity of confetti.

“Where does the water come from that will raise the level of the oceans? “

From the melting of ice on land masses like Greenland and Antarctica.

A little context: I just came back from coastal North Carolina. In the past, the NC coastline was located further westward, like all the way to Raleigh.

The author of this article, Chris Mooney, is not a real journalist, rather he is a ‘progressive’ true-believer in all leftist tropes, no matter how dumb and how incorrect.

Not too long ago I read one of the scientific magazines stating that when the earth warming scare was first published, nearby planets were also warming at about the same rate, thereby insinuating the earth’s rise had nothing to do with man. Does anyone recall the story?
