If Houston Police Chief Art Acevedo has anything to say about it, his officers will shine at the head of the city's Pride Parade.
The department's new "Pride Car" is ready to go. It's gassed up. Rainbow decals gleam from every side, saluting Houston's lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community.
Acevedo plans to be front and center Saturday and he's strongly encouraged his top leadership to join him in the march.
"By actually participating ... we send a very powerful message that we're an inclusive department," he said, "where every segment of society is welcome, is respected, and will be protected by the Houston Police Department."
But not everyone is ready to join the parade. The prospect of marching in the free-spirited gay-rights celebration has some members of his leadership crying foul, and pictures of the festive cruiser sparked contentious debate on social media from nonplussed naysayers.
"Our duty is to protect and serve, not participate in an event that completely goes against our religious beliefs," said one commander, who asked not to be identified.
The behind-the-scenes brouhaha comes as Acevedo — who just celebrated six months as the city's top cop — continues his efforts to remake the department and bring it in line with his ethos for "relational policing."
He's made it clear he expects his command staff to maintain a visible presence at major community events.
When asked about the complaints Friday, Acevedo said he hadn't received any pushback from subordinates, only a call from the union asking if attendance was mandatory.
"If people are available, like any other community event, I expect them to be there," he said. "If they're not available, and they have a conflict, they just have to let me know."

Y’know, I think if America had taken a cue from biblical practice, this debacle might have been avoided.
God didn’t want the matter to even rise to the level of law unless there were “two or three witnesses.” At that point the penalty would be severe, but those who bay for the old time religion also seem to forget that the equivalent of Lawrence couldn’t ever have happened under that system. No witnesses except the participants: the act skates. (And under Jewish custom, the witnesses even had to warn the would-be miscreants.) Leave the closet alone, but crack down hard on the public flaunting. That would have robbed a case like Lawrence of its sympathy.
At least that’s IMHO as a bible student but not an expert on everything.

The greater concern of God right now is where the obedience of Christians is. If God wanted to damn the world it would have happened long ago. Christians will not be in a position to punish every sin and disobedience, until their own obedience is complete. The half hearted churchly stuff that often ignores the widow and orphan is one thing that God is patiently waiting to improve. Yeah, that sounds liberal. And it is liberal, in a genuine sense. Not our faux-liberal government uber alles.

I will never forget many many years ago reading Cinderella to my 3 1/2 year old niece and the word gay was in the story as in happy, frolicking. . .my niece looked up at me and asked, “Is Cinderella gay?” I was totally flabbergasted to say the least. I said no and kept reading. These kids pick up on adult conversations to a degree we can’t even imagine.
With the exception of Christians and their children. They can go to hell.

All in the name of equality and tolerance but they are the protected class of people who are more equal than others and tolerate nothing that differs with them. I am sick of these people who are nothing more than a gay mafia.

I think I can answer that. Because the new chief is a grandstanding ass! He’s a media grabber to the first degree. I can tell you without a doubt that there are more officers that completely disagree with this than not. A member of our family is a Houston Police Officer
and I know he’s disgusted! It breaks my heart to see my hometown in the pits of deviant political correctness!
Most people disagree with the homosexual agenda, so I understand that most are not like this. There is always some element of force that goes hand in hand with this particular agenda.
I think agreement/disagreement with the LGBTQ etc.... agenda is generational. I have teenagers and young adults in my home and their generation as a whole ( not my kids) are very accepting and supportive of this mess we find ourselves exposed to. Additionally these kids are sheltered and ignorant of what the whole agenda is really about, and nobody will tell them the truth.

When the union asked if attendance was mandatory, he said it was a community event. IOW yes, it’s mandatory if you don’t want to be singled out. If he didn’t do this I imagine no on would show up. Don’t think it’s just for the cops, all city employees will be encouraged to attend. BTW if you want to be excused all you have to do is tell him. Then he can explain to you your being written out of the budget.
