When the full returns are counted, Republicans here will have to ask themselves why the race was so close in a community that Mitt Romney won by 23 points in 2012, and also what Handel did right to keep her own fortunes separate and apart from Donald Trumps Tweet storms.
But Democrats will have more soul searching to do. They are now zero-for-four in special elections since Trump became the president and need to understand why.
Theyll be quick to say the Ossoff race never should have been so close, which is true. And that Ossoff won in a sense just by being competitive in an R+10 district, which is sort of true.
But after $23 million, a candidate who genuinely ignited the grassroots, and a Republican president who may or may not be (but probably is) under FBI investigation and cant stop talking about it, the real question Democrats need to answer is: Whats it going to take to win an election in the era of Trump?
As of Tuesday night, they still have no idea.

Not much of a blue wave was it? :^)
Nanners just cost her weirdos 23 million.
God only knows how many billions those idiots wasted on Hillary. At least 1.2 billion reported.
That’s a lot of help for the poor in their districts that they flushed down the toilet.
It isn’t the money, it’s the power. They are going to lose a head gasket and somebody high up is going down.
These people need feel good juice everyday and so far it is just rancid crap. They cannot maintain any level of normal thought. They have lost their media machine.
Trump is winning on all levels. They are understanding it is their own enclaves that promote them. It is not the American Electorate.
They have Liawatha and Crazy Uncle Bernie. Thats it.
How so? Price won the district with massive majorities. Their point is that Trump was less popular there and Handel had a tougher time in a district that was reliably Republican. That's undeniable and it's part of the story.
Crushing. Lol
Harassment seems like a bad strategy.
I’ve never understood why these people think that Money wins Elections!
I realize that money is a factor; but you can bombard me forever with ads featuring gratuitous and meaningless buzzwords, and I won’t pay a bit of attention. Unless you have a Candidate of strong, honest character and some genuine patriotic Fire! in him/her, I’m going to keep looking.
The left seems to think that their socialist ideas can win if they just keep putting more and more Money into them - and that’s kind of a hoot ;-)
Notice that Russia is off the page.
Trump has put somebody on notice.
“folks actually LIKE Trumps tweets.”
You make a good point.
Greg Gutfeld has been making that same point on the Five (not a bad show if you mute every word Juan Williams says).
Gutfeld said - if you think about it, Trump’s tweeting is the ultimate transparency.
Isn’t that what the left is always calling for?
You make a good point as well. I’ve had mixed thoughts about the President’s tweets; but lately I’ve been thinking again ;-)
Ms. Murphy needs to seek therapy-- just like all the other Liberal haters out there.
“Why would they omit that?”
The author was walking a thin and difficult line. He really wants to help the Democrats figure out what they are doing wrong and to do that he has to say some honest things they don’t want to hear. On the other hand, he can’t be too honest because he’s the media and because by doing so he builds up the Republican side as honest and more popular. (Also, being too honest will get his car keyed, lose him dinner invitations and possibly his job.) In essence, he’s saying, look, I’m with you, okay? But you really need to kick the cocaine and alcohol and do honest work. Look at the woman who actually got the job over you. She’s honest, popular and doesn’t lie. You need to act more like that. Mind you, I’m not saying to give up the cocaine and alcohol, but you should at least pretend to be more like her. (Cocaine and alcohol used here to illustrate the Left’s addiction to its toxic core beliefs.)
“Jon Ossoff’s $23 Million Loss Shows Dems Have No Idea How to Win in the Age of Trump”
That’s OK, recent past & present show (R) have no idea how to lead, let alone via their platform (small govt) or Constitution.
‘Anxiously’ awaiting the Capitalist\Free Market ideas within their O’Care substitute (that they never repealed). /s
You must not be on Twitter.
There's a fair amount of outright sedition, and a lot of not-stop Trump hatred - "we're gonna lock him, his family & his staff up, jail his collaborators, etc., etc."
Jon Ossoff came in third, after #RodneyStooksbury. Karen Handel, 134,595, Rodney Stooksbury, 124,917, Jon Ossoff, 124,893.
Rodney Stooksbury ran against Tom Price in November 2016.
He literally had no campaign - nobody knew who he was, nor did he have any signs out.
Ossoff spent 30 million dollars to get 24 less votes than an unknown "Bob Smith" who didn't campaign.
That's undeniable and it's part of the story.
Ossoff could have gotten the same result by randomly punching 24 crazy cat lady Hillary voters at the polls on Tuesday.
And it would havbe been a lot cheaper...😀
D1,
In 2012 Obama beat Romney nationally with the mantra “War on Women” and a bunch of celebrities. In 2016 that did not work. OK, H was excruciatingly awful, Trump was more skillful than the media admits, but also maybe the voters just got tired of identity politics.
Tom Price was punished and they changed the electoral district boundaries to include more democrat areas. It is a significantly different riding now and will be a battleground for years to come, unless they re-draw it again, of course.
