A 16-year old boy was mauled and killed by a black bear Sunday while running a mountain race, Alaska State Troopers said.
The teenager, whose identity has not been released, was a participant in the juniors division of the Robert Spurr Memorial Hill Climb race between Anchorage and Girdwood, the Alaska Dispatch News reported.
Brad Precosky, the races director, said the runner had apparently made it to the halfway point turnaround on Bird Ridge Trail when he texted a family member that he was being chased by a bear. The family member alerted Precosky about the text and a search was immediately executed.

Gee Yogi.
Alaska Ping
A black bear? Must run up on a momma and her cub(s).
Running from a bear is an enticement. The bear follows instinct. The boy acted like prey.
Victim is Patrick Cooper of Anchorage.
I feel badly for him and his family. On a side note, if I were being chased by a bear, I’m not too sure I’d be sending text messages while it was happening.
Black bears are responsible for more attacks. Proportionally grizzlys are more aggressive, but there are a hell of a lot more black bears.
If he can afford the extra weight of a phone.....take a light plastic firearm instead.
note: when being chased by a bear, don’t stop to text.
The “wild” black bears around here do everything they can to sneak off and avoid contact with humans. The suburban black bears are another story.

In any case sad for the guys family.
This headline is one of the very few times when ‘teen’ doesn’t properly identify the race of the victim.
No doubt firearms are prohibited by the event sponsors.
Probably because of event insurance.(It seems you can hardly have any public gathering without liability insurance.)
He should have played “dead,” as Bugs Bunny taught us.
Yep. When you have run, run, don’t text.
Me neither. Video is better. And rotate the phone to landscape mode.
> note: when being chased by a bear, dont stop to text.
Probably got caught while trying to post pictures of it to Instagram.
I guess he couldn’t outrun the next racer, either.
It was only a 3 mile run. The report says awards were already being handed out. So, did he decide to run by himself after everyone was finished or what?
