Odds of a tropical storm creep up to 90 percent

The odds of a tropical storm hitting southeast Texas this week are inching slowly upward as swirling winds pick up in the Caribbean.

A tropical disturbance sparked by a broad band of low pressure in the northwestern Caribbean now has a 90 percent chance of turning into a tropical storm, according to the National Hurricane Center. If that system hits Houston, it could mean a torrent of rain and possible flooding.

But as of now, it's still not clear where the stormy weather will hit.

"A lot of the models early on were going towards Florida and or south of Corpus Christi into Mexico," said National Weather Service meteorologist Wendy Wong. "But some of the newer ones have a wider spread and it looks like most of the U.S. Gulf Coast should be keeping an eye on this now."

Over the weekend, the warm seas and swirling winds have combined to toss a disorganized system of showers and thunderstorms at parts of the Caribbean. Over the coming days, that system is expected move slowly northwest over the Yucatan Peninsula and into the Gulf of Mexico where it will likely coalesce into a tropical or subtropical storm.

Wimberley IS beautiful....except when it floods :(

I take it you don’t live there, since you misspelled Wimberley.

This one's a 23KW Koehler, propane. We have a 500 gallon tank, which would probably only run it for 48-72 hours or so.

So, we would likely just use it sparingly during a prolonged outage until we know there's more propane available.

Wow, that's a family pedigree. I've been in Alabama about twenty ears now. Been an NWS Skywarn storm spotter about twenty-five. Took college courses in meteorology, oceanography, and whatnot because I've been fascinated by weather since I was a little kid growing up in the mountains. My computers and phone are loaded with weather apps and links, as well.

If hurricane hits it might blow your house away whether you are there or not.

We go to Pass Christian every summer for a week. First time we went was week before the most horrible storm struck. At least we have memories of what was. We went through Ike and lost a lot but it was just stuff.

Go to Wimberly, be with your family and be safe.

Nah.

When I lived in Texas I lived in Bellaire and Richmond.
(BTW, Jane Long is buried in Richmond)

Dad told me before NOAA the state of flat Had weather stations every 30 miles on the coast from Jacksonville to key West, then up the west coast to port st. Joe. They would take barometric readings every half hour and call it into Miami. The lowest reading was where the cane would hit. Pretty primitive but accurate

“They’ve been running this prediction every season since Hurricane Ike.”

More like since President Ike. :)

Mountains? What that? If you stand on a ladder I could probably see you from here. Florida’s pretty flat.
Oh, we only have 2 seasons here. Hot and really hot! You grew up in the mountains? Which state?
