People think that Abe Lincoln was such a benevolent President. He was actually a bit of a tyrant. He attacked the Confederate States of America, who seceded from the Union due to tax and tariffs. (If you think it was over slavery, you need to find a real American history book written before 1960.)
This picture is of 38 Santee Sioux Indian men that were ordered to be executed by Abraham Lincoln for treaty violations (IE: hunting off of their assigned reservation).
So, on December 26, 1862, the Great Emancipator ordered the largest mass execution in American History, where the guilt of those to be executed was entirely in doubt. Regardless of how Lincoln defenders seek to play this, it was nothing more than murder to obtain the land of the Santee Sioux and to appease his political cronies in Minnesota.

300+ were sentenced to death. 38 were hanged, probably the worst of the bunch.
Let’s use this story to shore up the wave of people who want to change *Columbus Day* to Indigenous Indian day. Meh.
Lincoln stated the war wasn’t about slavery. Many, many times.

We did often times treat the Native Americans unjustly, but this story is a travesty upon the facts in this case.
Looks like even 19 year FReepers can be pulled in by fake news.
A lesson to us all.
“The constitution is not a suicide pact”. He wasn’t a tyrant, he was one of the few people that could not be corrupted by power. Sort of like George Washington himself. The benevolent tyranny is heaven.
Lincoln undoubtedly was the worst president ever.
Lincoln was America’s Hitler.
Slavery was evil. Anyone who supports slavery, or excuses a government which supported or allowed slavery in any way shape or form is human scum.
The South seceded to preserve slavery. Lincoln fought the South to maintain the Union. Both were express about their respective reasoning.
Idiotic
The war was about slavery, taxes, tariffs, and keeping all of the states in the Union. Lincoln said what he needed to say in order to keep the war effort going. Of course it was about slavery. There were plots and sub plots. A novel has more than one chapter.
Misinformation on purpose needs to be a crime.
>The revisionist view is that the Sioux did nothing wrong by murdering their way from farm to farm.
Listen, it was just white people they raped and murdered. When it happens to whites it’s justice. Hanging the Sioux who did the raping and murder is the real injustice. /s
An ignorant bigot might think so...
Can we make a little list of society offenders who never will be missed [Lord High Executioner - the Mikado]
Yes, it was. 100%. If the North hadnt wanted to get rid of slavery, the South would never have seceded.
Say what you will, but I cannot go a thousand feet in any direction from my home without seeing a historical marker about a troop movement, a line of fortification or a home that was used as a HQ or hospital in the War Between The States. The Southern States fought because the South was invaded by Northern Armies of oppression and subjugation.
My Great Grandfather fought in the Battle of Kennesaw Mountain which is five miles from my house. It really bothers me when armchair warriors ascribe malicious motives to people in another time you could not possibly have any knowledge of.
