Attorneys general for Washington, D.C. and Maryland announced they're suing President Trump for accepting millions in payments from foreign governments which they say is "flagrantly violating" the Constitution's anti-corruption laws.
"Never in the history of this country have we had a president with these kinds of extensive business entanglements, or a president who refused to adequately distance themselves from their holdings," said D.C. Attorney General Karl A. Racine in a news conference on Monday. "President Trump's business and his dealings violate the constitution's anti-corruption provisions."
The lawsuit was filed Monday in the U.S. District Court for the District of Maryland, the report said.
"The president, above all other elected officials must have only the interest of Americans at the heart of every decision," said Maryland Attorney General Brian Frosh.
In particular, the attorneys general declared that Mr. Trump's international hotel chain, among other international business interests, is a violation of the emoluments clause.
"Foreign governments are spending money there (at the hotel in Washington) in order to curry favor with the president," Racine said.
The emoluments clause, which is outlined in Article I of the Constitution, states that "No Title of Nobility shall be granted by the United States: And no Person holding any Office of Profit or Trust under them, shall, without the Consent of the Congress, accept of any present, Emolument, Office, or Title, of any kind whatever, from any King, Prince, or foreign State." Essentially, the emoluments clause attempts to prevent corruption and influence from foreign governments over United States government officials.
"President Trump's vast global businesses and that empire he has is entangled with foreign and state government interest," Frosh said. He later added that the president's "personal interests could affect decisions about every aspect of American life from national security... to protection of natural resources."

“Never in the history of this country have we had a president with these kinds of extensive business entanglements,
Uh, George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Herbert Hoover were all successful businessmen prior to their time as President.
I just wonder what the State of Maryland and the incredibly insane Attorney General thinks is to be gained by this? I suspect nothing but tying Trump up in court and wasting our taxpayer money.
Of course, the lunatics in the General Asylum just voted to give him permission to sue Trump without the permission of the Governor.
Lame........................
Hey Frosh, remember that FBI Headquarters building that is being fought over between VA and MD.
I got a funny feeling you personally just lost it for Maryland.
Good deep state CBS headline though. The Russia meme is collapsing so they have to do something...
They are getting lower and lower in the barrel. That’s why they are turning to open calls for assassination.
The countless “pay-for-play” donations to the Clinton foundation ignored, and swept under the rug.
These people supposedly staying at Trumps hotel, are paying for standard products and services, such as lodging, meals, etc. BIG DIFFERENCES.
The Fake News foreign payments to his business
President Trump held a news conference with one of his attornys, a woman, before January 20th.
Trump had a mountain of file folders in front of him, and he and his attorney announced that he was turning his business interests over to his sons.
At that news conference, then President-Elect Trump announced that any payments he received from overseas were going to be donated to the U.S. Treasury. So where’s the “profit?”
These two attorney generals, who are nothing more than partisan hacks, should resign in disgrace.
Amazing, isn’t it, that Lefties want the Constitution applied vigorously in regard to Presidential qualifications? Of course, with Obama, they could not be bothered to even consider the possibility that he was not a natural born citizen qualified for office.
Endless harassment in lieu of legitimate political opposition. Trump has a a pair of poodles as Speaker of the House and Senate Leader. He needs a couple of pit bulls. Also he did not choose wisely when he selected Sessions as Attorney General. He made a big mistake when he passed on Gingrich and Giuliani. He could have made good use of Bolton also in dealing with the EU and NATO. He’ll never please the liberals and now he knows it. He has to learn the Washington ways to make them suffer when they attack. Its not a business. You can’t just cancel their contract. You must however punish them severely when they attack. Trump has to be more Shermanesque when dealing with the Left if he wants to succeed.
This is the same DC and Washington democrat party who could not the problem with Hillary selling her State Dept position - and the entire US State Dept decision process! - for money “donated” to her private accounts!
I agree, Sessions need to step up and soon.
I see the whole thing as as a race to quash Trump one way or another, before Ginsburg or others retire from the SCOTUS.
These constant attacks will backfire on them in a huge way in my opinion in 2018. People are just sick of it. Tuning it out.
Consider DC re-elected Marion Barry AFTER he was caught in a crack den .
They are beyond any hope and proof this country needs a national divorce or some good “housekeeping”.
Its Mad Rat Disease (instead of mad cow)
Accepting money from foreign governments? You morons really want to go there? Can you say Uranium One?
“There will be another 3 1/2 years of these continued assaults”
Why? It is morally wrong. Why are they allowed to get away with it?
Democrats, liberals, big-government statists will not give up trashing President Trump. I hope (and believe) he’s learned the radical left playbook and will continue fighting back. I don’t know another person on the right with his tenacity. Trump’s the last line of defense between liberty and tyranny.
“Accepting money from foreign governments? You morons really want to go there? Can you say Uranium One?”
Yes, but they’re betting that the media will never say it.
Maybe I’ll write a book about a rich guy who has an epiphany and starts extorting the truth out of media slime...kidnapping their kids, filming them in flagrante delicto, cutting the occasional throat...
Maybe I could call it “Whip Me, Beat Me, Make Me Write Bad Checks.”
