Democrat Jon Ossoff pulled ahead of Republican Karen Handel in the latest poll of a closely-watched Georgia special congressional election after he reported raking in an unprecedented $15 million over the past two months.
But operatives in both parties tracking the race say it has likely changed less than the new Atlanta Journal Constitution poll suggests, and say they still expect a photo finish on June 20.
Polling is tricky in special elections, when turnout is unpredictable. And after months of intense campaigning and airwaves saturated with ads, voters' opinions are largely set in place.
An advertising arms race between both parties has pushed spending the race north of $35 million, making it the most expensive House race in history as local TV stations add broadcasts to their programming in order to keep up with demand for more room for ads.
Early voting started last week in the race to fill the seat vacated by Health and Human Services Secretary Tom Price, which has become a national battleground over President Donald Trump and his healthcare plan.
Ossoff and Handel have been locked in more or less a dead heat since the first round of voting in April. But with Trump's national approval rating falling to new lows, Handel has tumbled a bit locally in the north Atlanta suburbs that make up Georgia's Sixth Congressional District.
The biggest change came in a new Atlanta Journal Constitution poll of likely voters, which found Ossoff leading Handel 51 percent to 44 percent in a district that has long been a conservative stronghold. Crucially, the poll showed Ossoff chipping off 13 percent of Republican voters and winning half of independents.

Boy I hope this is not another in a long long line of disappointments for them...
I have been tracking the Handel/Ossoff polls for weks. All of them are conducted by extreme left wing polling organizations and, all follow the same party line!!! I put no credence in any of them, just like I put no credence in any of the POTUS polls. I predicted that trump would win the to become the POTUS very early in the POTUS campaign, for two reasons, which turned out to be true.
One that Trump would win the election with the backing of millions of “blue collar” union workers and that he would win the votes of many Hispanics and African-Americans who were convinced that Obama/Clinton/the Democrat Party did nothing for them in the eight years of the Obama POTUS to make life better for them with good education, good jobs, good business opportunities, etc. I also predicted the GOP wins in Kansas, Montana and I am predicting the GOP will win the South Carolina seat election on June 20th.
As for the Handel/Ossoff race in the Georgia, 6th CD...Handel will win easily by a six to eight point victory margin!!! The early voting pattern is very heavy, and, in this case, that favors Republicans. Forget the polls, all of them...this is strictly a turnout election. Whoever turns out their vote in massive numbers wins this contest...and, it is the Republicans that are turning out in massive numbers!!! It is also note worthy that Karen Handel wiped up the floor with Mr. Ossoff in the two “local” candidate debates, this last week!!!
Now that is the Truth in a nutshell. Unfortunately sometime the only boat is a leaky one.
+1
Excuse me, the VOTERS of GEORGIA picked Handel. Trump didn’t pick anybody. And I’d be upset if he did. It’s not the president’s job to tell local people who to have represent them.
I don’t like Handel, but I’d much rather have someone selected by their home district than a pick imposed on them.
Hope you’re right-—and we both had Trump big, early on. My concern is that Handel is NOT a Trumper and in most ways is a bad candidate, but like you, I think she’ll win.
Very close though—1-2 points max.
The important factor is not the candidate...but, that a Republican wins. Why? If Ossoff wins, regardless of how the Democrat lowlife swoon & chant, it means very little politically. But, if Karen Handel wins this election...it will be a major blow to the entire Democrat Party who have throw millions, almost 40 million dollars behind Ossoff!!!
If Ossoff loses this race the Democrats will lose at least eight to ten Senators and, twelve to twenty House seats in the upcoming Mid-term Elections. The Democrat Party has no programs, objectives, plans for the American people...just hate of DJT!!!
All voters of “ALL”: political stripes should turnout and cast their votes for Ms. Karen Handel. This ladies and gentlemen is what is called a critical path item!!! VOTE HANDEL!!!
I just respectfully disagree, and I think Trump wants a good media team too or Dubke wouldn’t have been out and Spicer/Sanders wouldn’t be shuffled back and forth. Trump himself gave a C on messaging.
A good media team could really help Trump. He has a great message, and we aren’t hearing it because the media Russia narrative is swallowing it up. On policy, they’ve managed to make Obamacare more popular than the ACHA, they report little of the good or meetings that he has, they have people convinced he has lied on things he hasn’t, etc. There just isn’t sufficient defense or promotion of his policies. They have to go on the offense. They need to have a Twitter account that Tweets out every time the media gets caught in a lie. They to counter the media narrative on his policies or there are people who voted for him and those independents who didn’t (the left is lost) who will believe them. Read the Twitter account Trump Regrets. Some of those people are lying and never voted for him, but others have swallowed the media narrative. It’s imperative he expands beyond his base. When his approval ratings can’t get above 40%, that comes down to bad communications in my opinion.
I hope so. This poll is saying a pretty decent amount of Republicans are voting for Ossoff.
Sorry for the misunderstanding I meant Tom Price. He should have picked an outsider for AG and other positions so we would not have expressive run offs and compromise.
Yeah you always have tradeoffs. Do you want a guy who really shares your views & will push your agenda? Have to risk a house seat or two.
No offense, but Trump seems to do just fine without savvy media experts.
