Democrat Jon Ossoff pulled ahead of Republican Karen Handel in the latest poll of a closely-watched Georgia special congressional election after he reported raking in an unprecedented $15 million over the past two months.
But operatives in both parties tracking the race say it has likely changed less than the new Atlanta Journal Constitution poll suggests, and say they still expect a photo finish on June 20.
Polling is tricky in special elections, when turnout is unpredictable. And after months of intense campaigning and airwaves saturated with ads, voters' opinions are largely set in place.
An advertising arms race between both parties has pushed spending the race north of $35 million, making it the most expensive House race in history as local TV stations add broadcasts to their programming in order to keep up with demand for more room for ads.
Early voting started last week in the race to fill the seat vacated by Health and Human Services Secretary Tom Price, which has become a national battleground over President Donald Trump and his healthcare plan.
Ossoff and Handel have been locked in more or less a dead heat since the first round of voting in April. But with Trump's national approval rating falling to new lows, Handel has tumbled a bit locally in the north Atlanta suburbs that make up Georgia's Sixth Congressional District.
The biggest change came in a new Atlanta Journal Constitution poll of likely voters, which found Ossoff leading Handel 51 percent to 44 percent in a district that has long been a conservative stronghold. Crucially, the poll showed Ossoff chipping off 13 percent of Republican voters and winning half of independents.

Newt Gingrich would really carry a lot more clout in this nationalized and sensationalized local race, than most of the other top tier Republicans, and he would be in a position to actively aid the campaign.
But Karen Handel is going to have to show the voters SOMETHING besides “I’m not Pajama Boi”.
7% is kind of the normal skew toward Democrats that NBC gives its pre-election polling.
Since they have such high hopes on this race, it is probably too tempting to resist, to bake in a few extra points of bias.
Ossoff is beyond horrible, the ultimate arrogant elitist liberal. But he may well win. It’s hard to make a case for another GOP member of this ridiculous Congress. It’s hard to imagine any reason at all to vote GOP except when you think about Dems like Pajama Boy Ossoff.
The Democrats seem to have endless oceans of money. It is reaching the point that it would be cheaper if they just paid a large round sum to each voter to support the Rat candidate ... but that would be illegal.
Color me surprised. You blame Trump.
Just wow.
One poll has this a 3 point race, this poll a 7 point race.
Given that NO polls correctly are identifying party affiliation, it’s probably very, very close. I have it within 2 either way-—Handel up one, Pajama Boy up one. The problem, contra what some posters here say, is that Handel is just a bad candidate-—a Hillary at the House level.
Hope not and the GOP need to get on the ground and work this ASAP
I think this election was decided in their debate when Handel took a scalpel to his package.
Plus another post a few days ago say that some of these polls are including Metro Atlanta which is heavily black and leftarded.
She seems to be yet another weak GOP candidate.
Sao a White Male is beating a Female. I’m sure the Democrats haven’t figured out their own issue with demeaning women?
Let’s hope this poll is as accurate as the other recent ones have been
Where did I blame Trump?
Nah. That district ain’t worth it
Yep. They are too busy reacting to the media’s phony Russia narrative and infighting rather than getting things done.
President Trump won this district by 49 to 47% approximately.
The poll used 50 to 40% with more Hillary voters.
Price got about 61%.
Who will Ossoff vote for ?
I understand but the fact that NO POLL even the ones some people here consider credible state polling firms have Handel ahead.
If GA wants someone to vote for big government and open borders after all we’ve seen, then what can ya’ do.
Forget the polls!!! They are all left wing, progressive rag sheets. This is a turnout election. Turnout is everything. So, Republicans, Conservatives, Independents, etc., turnout and, vote for, Republican, Karen Handel!!! End of story!!!
You forgot to mention that the majority of Americans hate Obumacare, but I expect that from you.
You cherry-pick data to make Trump look bad. You blame Trump and his team a lot. Looks like you got your Soros talking points.
You also didn’t mention that the majority of Americans don’t believe the leftist propaganda press. Why not?
You’re a Soros troll.
