California voters overwhelmingly oppose a recent tax and fee package pushed by Gov. Jerry Brown and the Democratic-dominated Legislature to pay for road repairs, a new poll finds.
The gas tax law, which ushers in a 10-year program to raise more than $52 billion for transportation projects, is so unpopular it could backfire on Democrats in upcoming elections.
Fifty eight percent of voters oppose Senate Bill 1, including 39 percent who say they strongly reject the legislation, according to the survey from UC Berkeleys Institute of Governmental Studies. Only 35 percent favor the law, which raises taxes on gasoline and diesel and hikes vehicle registration fees to fix roads and highways.
The opposition is widespread. Voters in all major regions of the state other than the Bay Area, all listed races and ethnic subgroups, and all age categories over 30 are unhappy about it. Strongly liberal voters are the only group in which a large majority supports the law.
Senate Bill 1 endeavors to raise $5.2 billion annually through a 12-cent gas tax increase that begins in November and a new fee based on the value of vehicles.

All Brown has to do is claim it is for education and the numbers will reverse.
Hate the gas tax? Wait until the single payer and the Paris Accord taxes kick in.
The purpose of this “Transportation” tax is to fund Jerry’s high speed rail fiasco.
There’s no intention to use the money to fix the roads or else they’d be using existing funds to fix the roads.
“Cheapest gas in Needles, CA right now: $3.79/Gal
Cheapest gas in Ehrenberg, AZ (just across the river) right now: $2.29/Gal”
You mean Blythe, CA right? Ehrenburg is located across the river from Blythe. I grew up in Blythe. I’m sure the same situation in Needles too. It was last summer. Needles was like a ghost town. Local Denny’s had just closed down. Sad.
“Only 35 percent favor the law...”
The 35% being the ones who live in ghettos and use public transportation, most likely free or at least subsidized.
Well said.
I’ll be filling up in Fort Worth, TX for about $2.10.
DOH! Yes, I meant Blyth!
I imagine a long line of CA cars heading into AZ for gas. I wonder if CA will try and stop them.
We can thank the TNGOP RINO party’s open primaries for the likes of Haslem, Corker, and Lamar!.
“California is one of the states that makes me think my state (Massachusetts) is relatively sane.”
Don’t let your guard down. Having lived half of my life in either state, there are just different forms of insanity (liberalness).
That's the problem - taxpayers in other states supporting commie states like California. Too bad we can't get legislation to stop THAT - to make taxes collected in one state NOT be used to benefit other states. Stop the freeloading, at least on the federal level.
A fee based on vehicle value? Isn’t that going to discourage new car sales? I’d think it would mean people would just keep driving their beater-mobiles till they drop!
.
>> “A fee based on vehicle value?” <<
We already have that, every year in the license fees.
.
.
Taxwise, California is a huge donor state.
.
“People vote for socialists and are shocked when they get socialism...”
It’s a shame that it doesn’t happen immediately.
“A fee based on vehicle value?”
We have that in MA-——it’s called an excise tax, billed yearly, and it’s based on the value of the car.
.
privatize and toll the interstates
eliminate the gas tax
One reason I'm outraged at this Senate Bill pushed by Gov Brown is that the gas taxes will go to the general fund, and not specifically for fixing roads as was the case in the past. That means the gas taxes raised can and most likely will be diverted to other pet projects. Plus the politicians, in future years, will again want to raise taxes to fix the roads because the money was diverted.
Correct. The wording of the Senate bill will place the new taxes into the general fund, where they can be diverted to other pet projects.
True.
I suppose if Massachusetts was on the Mexican border, we might have the same issues. And the fact that the Massachusetts state pensions aren’t completely and insanely broken and a ticking time bomb like California’s are isn’t for lack of trying, Massachusetts probably just doesn’t have as big a state employee population as California does.
That said, I had a most heartening experience recently...I went on a cruise to Bermuda a couple of weeks ago, and there was a comedian doing a show. I thought he was pretty good, then he started to dip into politics, and I thought Uh oh. Here we go...this is going to suck. Should I get up and leave? (knowing how these things go, especially on a ship where the vast majority of passengers are from Massachusetts)
The comedian said Who here hates President Trump? which was followed by a reasonably loud response from the crowd...not suprising.
Then, he said Who here LIKES President Trump?
The response significantly dwarfed that of the anti-Trump portion of the crowd.
I was surprised, but...gratified. (Judging from the somewhat stuttered words after the second round of cheering, I don’t think that was what the comedian expected to hear. I wonder if that was why he didn’t descend further into political ‘humor’ after that...) Anyway, that was nice to hear. Maybe there is some hope someday for this state.
