Major U.S. corporations and leading business figures are raising an eleventh-hour appeal to President Donald Trump, urging him to not pull the country out of the landmark 2015 Paris Agreement on climate change.
Following Tesla (TSLA, -0.44%) CEO Elon Musk's suggestion that he would quit his positions on several White House advisory councils if Trump's decision is to exit the deal, as has been widely reported, other firms and business leaders have also come out in favor of the pact. Oil giants ExxonMobil (XOM, +0.30%) and ConocoPhillips (COP, +0.92%) were among companies that reiterated their support for the accord ahead of Trump's announcement, reports Bloomberg.
"Energy needs are a function of population and living standards," Exxon CEO Darren Woods said at the company's annual investor meeting in Dallas Wednesday, according to Bloomberg. Woods' position in favor of staying in the deal is the same as his predecessor, current Secretary of State Rex Tillerson. "When it comes to policy, the goal should be to reduce emissions at the lowest cost to society," Woods said, adding that demand for oil will keep growing even with the climate deal in place. ConocoPhillips thinks that being part of the Paris Agreement allows the U.S. to continue having a role in shaping efforts to reduce carbon emissions. "It gives the U.S. the ability to participate in future climate discussions to safeguard its economic and environmental best interests," company spokesman Daren Beaudo told Bloomberg in an email.

No. When it comes to policy, the goals should be to ditch the bogus Paris Climate Agreement and to completely remove all vestiges of Global Warming from the federal government.
Global Warming, or whatever name it morphs into, is a scam foisted on the unwary by totalitarians. It has no basis in science. It is designed to overwhelm the common man's pocketbook by death through a thousand cuts and make him dependent on the federal government.
CEOs are free to commit their companies, it's bondholders, stockholders, and employees to this nonsense. They can suffer marketplace consequences. But the federal government has no authority to subject the nation to this.

if the Paris Climate Accord is set to cost the USA jobs and cause energy prices to rise by 20%, then Trump has no choice but to get us out of it. If he doesn’t, it will likely cost him his political future, if the ruling elite don’t get him first.

Irrespective of our “membership “ in the accord, individuals and companies can choose to reduce emissions as they see fit.
There is nothing preventing that at all.
Which means the reason to get into the “accord” is something else. What is it? My money?
Add to the subterfuge that the biggest polluters - China and India - aren’t even in the “accord”. Which means rules promulgated by the “accord” represent than 3% of emissions. That’s pointless. So why join up? More of my money?
Add to the subterfuge and the glaring omission of China and India the fact that nobody is even sure we’re causing warming or that we can slow it....or even that it matters...the earth changes it over time in cycles so who’s to say this isn’t normal?! Why continue the preposterous argument? Even more of my money?
It’s a load of crap and Trump had better not subject us to it. He promised he’d get us out from under it and it’s simply a decision for him to make.
It would be a real problem for his base should he make the wrong choice.

“Tons and Tons of Money involved”. You had better believe that. As with every Political event, just “Follow the Money” to see what is behind it. Money is the Mothers Milk of Politics and that will never change. These screaming CEO’s see Trumps decision to back out of the Paris Treaty as nothing more than a big hit on them personally or the future Profit Margins of their Corporations. As usual, it is always about the money.
If Trump makes congress vote on it he should give them a deadline. Something like “This is a one time chance, you have 30 days to bring this to the floor for a vote”. Otherwise I will kill it outright.
My guess is that oil companies, over time and at a considerable amount of pain, have accommodated what they saw as an unavoidable international climate change regime. Maybe they’ve been thrown a few bones along the way as well, but they’ve made their plans to get along as best they could with what they assumed to be an unalterable status quo.
Now whatever deals and accommodations they’ve, or strategies for coping with the climate change regime are out the window, and they will have to go back to the drawing board. They’re probably equally worried that when the days of Trump are over, there may be a new administration that gets them right back in the climate regime.
So I see this as much an aversion to uncertainty as anything else.
I do not think this was an instance of “agree to the climate change regime and we’ll pay you X billions of dollars in an unmarked brown paper C-141.”
If you read the statements made by all the deep pocket companies involved, you’ll pick up on their concerns very fast. It is all about their bottom line. Oh, they throw in a tear for the environment every so often but the main concern is $$$$$$$$$$$$$!
