McClellan was a great campaign engineer, training officer, disciplinarian, strategic planner, executive and manager.

At best, he was a barely competent tactical field commander .

I also would prefer an opponent who did not want to fight me and who attributed to me nearly mystical powers, including the multiplication of troops.
