I like the Trumps, however, ladies don’t wear hats or veils anymore in church and doing so made them look dumb

They generally do wear head coverings when meeting the Pope.

It's traditional and actually has scriptural precedent, even of the Papists are generally apostates even from their own strictures.

Some women still wear hats or mantillas. It’s voluntary. They might be sending a traditionalist message to the pope.

I wear a veil and so do many others. I don’t really care if I look “dumb.” I’m wearing it for Our Lord and the angels and not you or any other mere mortal.

NOT remotely dumb. Having met and kissed the ring of Pope Benedict let me tell you I wore a lace mantilla as did everyone else there who met him. it is what is done, out of respect for the Pope. Has nothing to do with the popular culture in the church and what people wear in the pews.

I wear a veil to Mass, and I am not alone.

I will be sure to tell all the ladies wearing hats and veils at my church that you think they look dumb.

You are mistaken there. About 30% of the women and even young girls in our church wear veils every week.

You're operating from a mistaken perspective. Women in the Catholic Church are returning to some of these long-standing (even ancient) traditions, and we see more and more veils at Mass, more kneeling, more taking the Eucharist directly on the tongue. Francis of course considers traditional beliefs and practices to be dreadful, and is trying to get rid of them, so the adherence to tradition that the Trump ladies showed was a subtle poke at his poor treatment of traditional Catholic Christians.

The purpose of the veil or mantilla is to show awe and submission to the real presence of Christ, not to Jorge Bergoglio himself. I try to wear one when I go to church. Most of the women wearing them are young, not middle-aged people like me.

Their attire style is a Vatican rule for non-royal women. Royal women such as Queens or Queen Consorts can wear white.

The Queen of England makes women wear stockings to her court (which Michelle ignored).
