President Donald Trump is asking Congress for $1.6 billion to begin building a wall along the border with Mexico, far short of the amount needed for a project sharply criticized by Democrats and even some conservative Republicans.
An internal Department of Homeland Security (DHS) plan in February estimated the total cost for the wall at $21.6 billion, but the White House's budget proposal for 2018, released in full on Tuesday, included a request for just $1.6 billion.
Two Republican aides in Congress said the modest request is an acknowledgement from the White House that full funding is not realistic given opposition from Freedom Caucus conservatives in the House of Representatives as well as Democrats in the House and the Senate.
Unless Trump is able to rally broader support and win more funding for construction in another fiscal year, his plans for a "big beautiful wall" that he promised during his election campaign last year may not be realized, the aides said.
The budget, which includes 10-year projections for spending for most areas of the government, did not include a 10-year plan for funding wall construction. "We are absolutely dead serious about the wall," White House budget director Mick Mulvaney told reporters on Tuesday.

Jim, you stated that Trump would never get Mexico to pay for the wall.
You do know that right?
I also stated that the wall will happen with positive economic effects.
You know that right???
.
“Mystery Babylon” says it all.
.
Jim, you charged him with never being able to get Mexico to pay for the wall.
That would be a major failure.
For some reason you won’t own up to it.
If the cost of the wall is $15 to $25 billion, you don’t think that him not getting Mexico to pay for it in some manner would be a major failure?
You put it out there. Don’t blame me for calling you on it.
Each post of denial, is just calling more attention to what you did.
Own up to it and move on.
Yes, I never believed that Mexico was just going to hand over a check, and anyone that did is a fool. I think the import tax is off the table as a lot of American businesses balked at that. But we will save a lot just by stopping the invasion. I hope they follow the law and not allow illegals to receive taxpayer funded benefits. Lots of ways to pay for the wall. If congress doesn’t want to play they’re only hurting themselves.
I think Trump will find a way to get money from Mexico for the wall.
He’s a crafty guy. In three years and eight months, if he hasn’t done it, I’ll accept that I was wrong.
For now, I’m simply not buying off on the idea that he never will.
+1

No pal. You own up to your misrepresentation and move on. What I said was not a declaration of defeat. That’s YOUR negative interpretation.
You also lie when you publish half-truths - taking my words out of context instead of addressing the whole of what I said. That’s what the Lying Left constantly does. You’re an expert at it. You should work for them - you’d be good.
In the meantime, you’re wasting my time. Go away.
I also hope he will get healthcare and tax reform done. You would think with the GOP majority, his agenda would be easier. I posted this article, not to degrade Trump, but because of the problems with congress. When Trump was elected, I actually thought tax reform would be a cake walk with majority GOP congress, looks like I was wrong.
Jim, for heaven’s sake man, get a grip.
Trump promised he would get Mexico to pay.
You declared that would never happen.
That is a major failure, and your attempt to deal with it is as well.
You go away. At least I’m making some sense.
I have not charged you with saying the wall would never be built.
Deal with reality bud.
I honestly think we need 40 million people converging on Congress over this.
Just choke Washington, D.C. until they get the message.
Sign me up :-)
Same here!
1. We’re just going to take a check from the Saudis for border security? I can’t articulate exactly why that strikes me as “wrong,” but it strikes me as wrong.
2. Texas is the place where wall construction is going to be far and away the most challenging. I’ve yet to hear how this is going to work regarding access to the Rio Grande.
They are NOT conservative. They are liberal-tarians. They want open borders.
We’re going to take the check. Period. What we use it for is up to us. I vote “the wall.”
2. Not my job to adjust the rights. Nothing gets done if you keep creating excuses.
You’re not making any sense. You take part of my comment and build your own interpretation and then accuse me of your half-truth and misinterpretation.
Enough.
And oh by the way, the TRUTH is that Mexico will not pay for the wall. YOU get a grip pal, deal with reality, and quit denying the truth.
And, go away.
Poor Jim. You screwed up and said what you did, and now you can’t take it back.
I’m all choked up over your predicament.
Buck up, it’s gonna be a long four years buttercup.
You absolutely have no idea what you’re talking about.
YOU screwed up, not me. I never declared defeat for Trump YOU did.
I’ve been saying Mexico won’t pay for the wall for the last year and a half dork. Get your head of out of your a$$ and deal with reality. Mexico is not paying for the wall. Cry me a river dork.
Read my posts for the last few years, stupid. They all cheer for Trump but a few call him out for this Mexico thing.
In the meantime I’ll continue to call ‘em as I see ‘em. If you don’t like it, lump it. And don’t cry too hard weenie.
