We've always heard about the exemption to free speech being "yelling fire in a crowded theater".

I'm curious if any legal opinions might see a point where the purposeful printing of false news stories to damage our President and possibly our security might be making the leap to criminality.

There are many exceptions to free speech. Yelling "fire" isn't the only one. You aluded to defamation.

Meanwhile, check 18 USC 2385 - Advocating overthrow of Government, but that triggers on advocating violence.

Seditious libel has a history in the US, with the Zenger trial being a significant reference point.
