SIDEBAR ISSUE -- BEWARE
Posted on 05/19/2017 8:05:07 AM PDT by John Robinson
Achtung! Don't mess with sidebars ("Configure Sidebar") for a few days. Some of the queries you may end up configuring will prevent you from accessing the site. As a work around I have reset the sidebars for everybody -- to be restored once the erroneous queries can be rewritten -- when I have the brains to do so (zzz) --- zzz (as a consequence, any changes you end up making will be obliterated once the great restoration of the glorious sidebar preferences is undertaken.)

"What's a sidebar?" It's a place to get a bit of liquid refreshment, and perhaps a bite to eat, when your tank gauges say "thirsty" and "hungry".

Hey John, after your well-deserved “zzz’s”, could you enlighten me as to why going to the cloud wouldn’t help with the hardware issues and make your life easier? I’m not any kind of s/w guru by any means. Maybe there are drawbacks to the cloud I don’t know.
Thanks for your efforts.

I salute you! Sleep. Then estimate for our "Redundancy Backup Fundraiser" just how much cash would you need to build some redundancy into the hardware, please. You've been too busy to read the posts on FB. We are extra motivated right this minute to shell out big bucks.
Maybe a short-term plan and a long-term plan. Also, several old timers in the biz offered to assist you gratis. We love this platform and do not want a "redesign" of esthetics or functionality, really not necessary for this audience. Thank you, John, for your dedication to a bunch of complainers, naggers and loudmouth know-it-alls.

Does that mean I shouldn’t reconfigure my sidebar, which I already did? Oooops!

Come on, really, what does it mean to configure a sidebar here? What am I missing?

Glad to see FR back up and running! We appreciate all that both of you do for us.
I have one request, once things are worked out: Can you somehow make FR load *faster* regardless of what browser we use? That's been an ongoing issue here for quite awhile now, and some FReepers I know of have given up on the site because of the slowness.
Thanks. :-)

Thanks for getting things working!
Have you considered storing the accounts and each of the forums in different db instances? That would complicate the “everything” queries, but at least you’d have separation of possibly corrupt data. You could also keep each forum db instance in a separate VM. Just a thought...

I always kill the sidebars, as I understand it increases server load. I’m sure some folk like it. Was wondering why it came back today. Figured you were fiddling with things. :-)

Great. Now I’m locked out of the site.
On a serious note, you guys aren’t running RAID-5? A disk failure should not bring us down.
