‘The unfortunate thing about Macy’s’: Just about everything
Washington Compost ^

Posted on 05/11/2017 3:07:47 PM PDT by ISTHISONETAKEN

Macy’s, it seems, can’t catch a break.

The beleaguered retail chain, which has been aggressively closing stores in recent months, announced more bad news Thursday: Sales were down in the first quarter of the year, leading to a 39 percent drop in profits.

As a result, the company’s stock price plunged more than 16 percent Thursday, to its lowest level since 2011.

I never warmed up to the Macy’s store in my area. It had an odd selection of high dollar designer merchandise in one part of the store (where it was usually devoid of customers) and a lot of cheap Wal-Mart quality junk and chintzy marketing in the rest of the store (with loads of “shoppers”). Their buyer obviously didn’t get it.

Everybody but Conservatives and Libertarians are welcome at Macy’s. The current CEO will have the distinction of running a historic business into the ground and costing his employees their jobs.

Shouldn’t Macy’s recognize that dissing Trump family is bad idea? Same as Target dissing normal Americans in favor of perverts.

I really think the concept of a 'store' is over. Most of my stuff I buy online. I go to the grocer

Macy’s terminated a Catholic security chief who stated that while he personally did not agree with the stores transgender polic y, he would enforce Macy’s policies

The retailer does not want my business either. I’m guilty of thoughtcrime apparently.

I haven’t been back since.

In fairness Macy’s is overpriced and has been living off it’s name and going broke for decades. The Trump decision was just another nail in the coffin.

I went to Macy’s with my wife about a month ago, when she was shopping for a dress. She took a couple of them into a dressing room to check the fit, while I waited outside. Not having anything else to do, I started looking around, and was totally astonished and disgusted by what I saw.

The department looked like a low-tier bargain basement discount store in the midst of a ‘Dollar Daze’ sale. There were clothes off the racks, draped over any horizontal surface or fixture, or lying in a heap on the floor. Prospective buyers didn’t bother to hang them back up, and there were no clerks in the area to do this, either.

The carpeting on the floor was absolutely FILTHY, with stains from spilled liquids, loose dirt, scraps of paper & cardboard boxes, etc. I can remember being in stores, seeing employees running a carpet sweeper or vacuum, but it’s clear that this hadn’t been done in days or weeks.

There was one cashier at a station in a neighboring department, where we went to pay. Several other payment desks were un-staffed. This store is clearly in its death throes.

It struck me how bad this truly was if I - a guy of 66, wandering aimlessly in the women’s department - noticed how filthy and disgusting the place was. I’ve never looked for or run across a retail establishment in such ill-repair. For me to recognize this was remarkable.

My first thought was that the internet, in-particular sites like Amazon.com, was likely instrumental in destroying this once vital and proud, important industry. But it’s more than that. The PEOPLE who take clothing off the hanger and then just throw it on the floor are to blame, too.

The store was once one of Detroit area’s famed J.L. Hudson locations, before being acquired by another retail giant of yesteryear, Macy’s.

Leaving politics aside, it’s sad to see what is happening to this industry and the workers who stand to become unemployed as a result.

That is how I regard them; years ago someone gave me a gift card so I had to shop there - and couldn’t believe something as common as dress shoes (nothing special) could cost so much. I bought them because otherwise I had no use for the card, but they were nearly twice as much as any pair of shoes I’d ever bought - and the quality was similar.

Macy’s is a holdover from a time when we had a vibrant middle class; those days are long past us.

Which wasn’t a fair depiction of Donald Trump’s own position, which seems to lean towards a generous idea of amnesty for some subset of Mexican illegales.

Something wicked from their way went, before Trump even entered their picture. Trump was the test, not the cause, of that something wicked.

America’s prosperity rode on its past greatness moments.

Alas, it became stagnant.

Trump has come on the scene cheering for conditions which will foment future greatness. But many people don’t want to hear it.

It may be that Macy’s will perish while the Walmarts of the world start adding higher and higher ends. Maybe there will be a Walton’s line of stores some day.

This was happening well before trump.

Macys downgraded itself as a store awhile ago. It isnt a top tier store. It in in the area of boston store now. That is not a good spot to be in.

My wife and I were in San Diego a couple weeks ago and we happened to stroll into Horton Plaza in downtown SD and we were shocked. More than half of the storefronts were empty. Nordstrom has vacated. I didn’t see an anchor for the entire plaza.
Back in my Navy days (91) that place was PACKED and every storefront was occupied. Walking through that place now was extremely depressing.
