US President Donald Trump has stirred debate by asking why the American Civil War happened, and pondering whether it could have been "worked out".
In a radio interview, he suggested the conflict might have been avoided if President Andrew Jackson had still been in office.
The 1861-65 Civil War between the northern and southern states was principally caused by slavery.

Every northern state had either eliminated slavery or had a defined path to eventual abolition. ZERO southern states had either.

Maryland did not have a path until 1863, long after the war started. Lincoln explicitly stated he had no intention of ending slavery.
The North had no moral high ground.

Saying that the south chose war to further their secession is like saying that the school kid chose war by refusing to give the bully his lunch money. I see. And what threat had the big bully North made that forced the South to respond with war?

Jeebus - are you really that uneducated?
Lincoln recognized that he didn’t have the power to issue an executive order eliminating slavery - it had to be done through the amendment process in Congress.
What Lincoln told the south was that he would not interfere with their pursuit of The Peculiar Institution in the south. He intended to block the expansion of slaver into the territories however.
There was plenty of dirt to go around but the north had infinitely higher moral ground than the south.

No, but you are.
Care to explain why federal marshals were still apprehending slaves in Union states even during the war?

Two minutes into the video shows a direct citation from the book, with specific cases.

OK, I went back and watched a little longer. It sounds like the marshals were doing their job.

“infinitely higher moral ground than the south.”

You claiming the south started the war is what causes the rest of your idiotic conclusions.

“You dont negotiate with an illegal government that no nation on earth recognizes as legitimate.”
You mean like the USA that waged war against the crown? Kind of a dumb statement that you made, huh?

You claiming the south started the war is what causes the rest of your idiotic conclusions. You claiming that they didn't explains the fantasy world that most Confederate supporters live in.

Bull Snipe isn’t the dumb one toad. The two events aren’t analogous.

It is not like negotiating with the crown. It is more like a President negotiating with the Isil “state” No nation on this planet recognizes it as a legitimate nation. No country anywhere on the planet earth, recognized the Confederacy as a legitimate nation.

That’s how I’ve come to learn it as well.

Slavery was still legal in 4 states of the Union. The Fugitive Slave Act had not been repealed. Therefore, Federal officials were acting in accordance with the law. There was a Supreme Court Decision that specifically stated the United States Government could not interfere with slavery in any state that legally recognized the practice.
Lincoln was obeying the law.

The North refused to remove their troops from sovereign confederate soil at Ft. Sumter in S. Carolina, and even attempted to fortify their position there.

The war was about States Rights...and had nothing to do with slavery until Lincoln threw that in. It is called the War of Northern Aggression for a reason in the South
Yes, that is more in line with the truth.
