A deal has been reached on a $1 trillion-plus bill to fund the government for the final five months of this fiscal year, an agreement that is likely to avert a government shutdown.
Congressional negotiators had been working through the weekend to hash out the last remaining complications in a bill to fund the government before the agreement was announced Sunday night.
After President Donald Trump backed down on funding for the construction of a border wall, some additional sticking points remained, including health benefits for coal miners, funding for Puerto Rico and an additional $30 billion for defense, delaying congressional negotiators and causing them to miss their deadline of last Friday. Congress passed and Trump signed into law a one-week extension to keep the government open and give negotiators more time.
The newly reached deal includes an additional $15 billion in defense spending, less than what Trump asked for, but still $25 billion more than last year's spending. It also includes a permanent fix to fund coal miners' health care instead of a temporary extension.
Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer of New York called the deal "a good agreement for the American people" that "takes the threat of a government shutdown off the table."
"The bill ensures taxpayer dollars aren't used to fund an ineffective border wall, excludes poison pill riders and increases investments in programs that the middle-class relies on, like medical research, education and infrastructure," Schumer said Sunday night.
"Early on in this debate, Democrats clearly laid out our principles," he said. "At the end of the day, this is an agreement that reflects those principles."

Paul Ossoff is a good democrat
If I were Trump I would call in the pubbies. Tell em all that the RNC will find and support any primary candidate who challenges these yobs. Plus I would promise to campaign against them
Does this goes to the president to sign?
The Media is crowing over Trump’s defeat and the “thousands” of anti-Trump protesters in the streets today.
This is “winning.”
You don’t live anywhere near the border.
The border is everywhere in the US. With 12 to 30 million illegal aliens running around the country, every state is a border state.
Tired of LOSING!!!
It’s time for a major political bloodbath within the GOP. These sell outs need to go, quick.
I am so freaking tired of being pissed on by these A-holes.
But Planned Parenthood, NPR, and sanctuary cities continue to get tax-payer funds. And secondly, how will Mexico “pay for the Wall” without those funds being appropriated for that use by the legislative branch? There’s no spinning this one.
It a’int his Budget
. “We must demand that Trump not endorse this capitulation!!”
Sure, demand away.
Republicrats never fail to disappoint.
RE: It aint his Budget
It will be if he signs it.
Can we get the NORKS to do their next nuke test in DC?
Congress is not empowered to tax for those purposes which are within the exclusive province of the States. Justice John Marshall, Gibbons v. Ogden, 1824.
From the accepted doctrine that the United States is a government of delegated powers, it follows that those not expressly granted, or reasonably to be implied from such as are conferred, are reserved to the states, or to the people. To forestall any suggestion to the contrary, the Tenth Amendment was adopted. The same proposition, otherwise stated, is that powers not granted are prohibited [emphasis added]. United States v. Butler, 1936.
Drain the swamp! Drain the swamp!
Remember in November 18 !
Since Trump entered the 16 presidential race too late for patriots to make sure that there were state sovereignty-respecting candidates on the primary ballots, patriots need make sure that such candidates are on the 18 primary ballots so that they can be elected to support Trump in draining the unconstitutionally big federal government swamp.
Such a Congress will also be able to finish draining the swamp with respect to getting the remaining state sovereignty-ignoring, activist Supreme Court justices off of the bench.
In fact, if Justice Gorsuch turns out to be a liberal Trojan Horse then we will need 67 patriot senators to remove a House-impeached Gorsuch from office.
Noting that the primaries start in Iowa and New Hampshire in February 18, patriots need to challenge candidates for federal office in the following way.
While I Googled the primary information above concerning Iowa and New Hampshire, FReeper iowamark brought to my attention that the February primaries for these states apply only to presidential election years. And after doing some more scratching, since primary dates for most states for 2018 elections probably havent been uploaded at this time (March 14, 2017), FReepers will need to find out primary dates from sources and / or websites in their own states.
Patriots need to qualify candidates by asking them why the Founding States made the Constitutions Section 8 of Article I; to limit (cripple) the federal governments powers.
Patriots also need to find candidates that are knowledgeable of the Supreme Court's clarifications of the federal governments limited powers listed above.
RE: It aint his Budget. It will be if he signs it.
Absolutely right. Has the possibility of a veto of this been mentioned, by anyone?
No, he needs to send a message now. If he does nothing then what good are his threats? They just run it up against the deadline and watch him cave again.
The first thing TRUMP has to INSIST -— GIVE ME FUNDING FOR THE WALL OR ELSE WE SHUT DOWN THE GOVERNMENT.
And yes, shut it down.
Stare them in the face.
The country will survive.
I am so POed about this I cannot see straight.
I fired off two e mails to my GOP! reps and told them when they come around for reelection if this POS passes, I will actively vote against them for any dem I can find, the most detestable the better. As far as Trump goes, he may think he has the people behind him but if he does not veto this, he will find out he will be a one term president. Never promise and not deliver. In business, when you give an agenda and those responsible to carry it out don’t, they get the ax. He cannot fire the Congress so his only recourse is a veto. Meanwhile, let me again thank the people of KY and WI for returning both those turds, McConnell and Ryno to their offices. McConnel set the tone a few months ago when he said there would be no tax change this year. Ryno has done nothing to get O care gone or to tamp down immigration. Both are traitors needing to be hung IMO.
When Elected, I said the best thing Trump will be will be a stop gap against the K street Dem cabal. Obviously I was right but now the stop gap has even collapsed. We MAY get one more SC person in, hopefully two, but that is the best we will do if the veto is not used here. Sorry to be disillusioned by the system which has become the system that money can buy.
